HINT FOR THIS SATURDAY NIGHT’S THEME (3.8.14)

5 Mar

HINT:

People who possess it try very hard to keep out of sight, but they’re everywhere. People who have this quality don’t want to be noticed because they think they aren’t good enough. Too bad. This week I’m putting them in the spotlight and arguing that the Great American Songbook wouldn’t be the same without them and this special quality. Want to hear my arguments? Talk to you Saturday night!

HINT:

What do Drew Barrymore, Dexter Gordon, Dakota Fanning, George Frederic Handel, Steve Jobs, Joe Lieberman, George Harrison, Bernadette Peters, and Tommy Tune all have in common – besides the fact that none of them will be listening to my show this Saturday along with practically everyone else.

Come on…Aren’t you even a little bit curious?

HINT FOR THIS SATURDAY NIGHT’S THEME (1.22.14)

19 Feb

HINT:

It’s been a rough winter to deal with, so let’s try a Mindfulness exercise. Imagine you’re someplace warm, someplace cozy, even small. No one but you is in this warm, cozy, even small room and you seldom leave. There are people nearby, but they don’t talk to you, don’t acknowledge your presence, even though many of them are just like you — oh wait! That’s Bernie Madoff. Crap! There’s got to be a better fantasy escape. What do you bet I come up with one by Saturday night?

Hey, this blog has been getting a lot of international visitors these days. Leave a message and say, Hi. I’d love to hear from you.

Okay I know that Saturday is the day AFTER Valentine’s Day, but surely you wouldn’t mind some songs about the myriad marvelous, memorable (and sometimes misguided) machinations of maintaining a meaningful relationship, right? What? You would? And stop calling you Shirley? Uh-oh…

A great song is the perfect marriage of words and music. Great jazz is the perfect marriage of freedom and control. A great arrangement is the perfect marriage of singer and orchestra. Can you think of another kind of perfect marriage in music? I can.

Saturday night’s show will be a program from the vast and qualitatively unfathomable Turntable For One archives. The results are known only to the accounting firm of Ernst and Young, but those number crunchers won’t return any of my calls.  So your guess is as good as mine.

HINT:

Every great song is a marriage between words and music; every great recording is a marriage between artist and arranger. But what about performances which represent yet another kind of marriage? I’ve got an hour of those planned for Saturday!

HINT FOR THIS SATURDAY NIGHT’S THEME (1.4.14)

Happy New Year, all!

Well, there’s another snow storm coming, which, this time, they’ve named Winter Storm Hercules. Don’t they get it that if they named these storms something like Herb or Bev, the storms would develop a poor self-image, suffer from low self-esteem, and would never achieve their full potential? Okay, maybe that didn’t work out so well for me, but it could produce a weakened snow storm which would mean I could actually get to the radio station.

Whether the show is live or pre-recorded, it will be a new show with a new musical theme especially selected for the start of the new year.

HINT:

Know the secrets of surviving 2014? I do.
