HINT FOR THIS SATURDAY NIGHT’S THEME (5.3.14)

30 Apr

HINT:

Jazz singers and country singers. Maybe you’re thinking, irreconcilable differences. But I’m picturing a Venn Diagram and now I’m thinking, hey, I’ve got  a very interesting hour of music planned.

PLAYLIST FOR “INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY” (4.26.14)

26 Apr

International Jazz Day is April 30th, but I couldn’t wait. Here’s a sampling of some wonderful jazz singers from around the world. Check out Jazz Day events at Jazzday.com. There must be something going on near you, so be sure to support this music we love.

It’s also almost Toots Thielemans’ 92nd birthday. He decided recently to retire, so I especially wanted to celebrate his birthday, his long career, and his music which always came straight from his heart into his harmonica. Thanks, Toots!

This week, as another in a series of uncalled for public services, I tried to warn you about a musical danger which is as rampant as it is clever – Anthropomorphism in the Great American Songbook. Don’t try to thank me — just doing my job. Okay, I changed my mind. Go ahead, try to thank me.

HINT FOR THIS SATURDAY NIGHT’S THEME (4.19.14)

15 Apr

HINT:

I’ve uncovered a plot hidden deep in the Great American Songbook to upend reality as we know it and make us believe in things which can’t possibly be true. Either you’re part of the solution or part of the problem. Guess which one I’m going to be this Saturday night.

There’s another new Turntable For One podcast on PRX, the Public Radio Exchange.,”Finding My Religion: A Soul-Searching Hour.” It’s probably a serious discussion of the Mind-Body problem as it pertains to current theological tenets, right? You might want to think again.

Here I am leaving a little surprise in Will Duchon's mailbox at WMNR. A water balloon is funnier than the time I left a kitten in his mailbox, right?

At that hour and after a couple drinks, this is the way the audience really sees me.

Dan Lenore, host of “On The Record.”Is it fair that he gets to have more hair AND more beard than I do?

Mark Morton, who keeps WMNR on the air, sent this from the nerve center of the radio station and I think he had a lot of nerve putting a promotional poster in the background.

HINT FOR THIS SATURDAY’S THEME (4.5.14)

2 Apr

HINT: What do you call that feeling you get when the team that beat your team in the first round gets knocked out of the tournament in the second round, or that feeling you get when the hedge fund guy who lost all your investments goes to jail for fraud (pretend that could really happen)? It’s the same feeling a radio host feels when he gives you a vague and ambiguous hint about his musical theme and then enjoys watching you struggle and lose sleep trying to figure it out. Whatever you want to call it, I’ve got an hour of songs about it planned for this week.
