HINT FOR THIS SATURDAY NIGHT’S THEME (3.1.14)

25 Feb

HINT:

What do Drew Barrymore, Dexter Gordon, Dakota Fanning, George Frederic Handel, Steve Jobs, Joe Lieberman, George Harrison, Bernadette Peters, and Tommy Tune all have in common – besides the fact that none of them will be listening to my show this Saturday along with practically everyone else.

Come on…Aren’t you even a little bit curious?

PLAYLIST FOR “THE DESERT ISLAND GAME” (2.22.14)

22 Feb

Which swimsuits to take to a desert island, which books, which movies, which antiseptics — all that’s easy. But which music? Tonight was another attempt at my coming to grips with the question that tantalizes and tortures people, usually when they’ve run out of important things to think about. Some of this music I can’t do without, and some it…well, choosing is just too hard. Don’t forget: You can play this game at home, but knowing you, you’ll somehow turn it into another drinking game. I’m so proud.

HINT FOR THIS SATURDAY NIGHT’S THEME (1.22.14)

19 Feb

HINT:

It’s been a rough winter to deal with, so let’s try a Mindfulness exercise. Imagine you’re someplace warm, someplace cozy, even small. No one but you is in this warm, cozy, even small room and you seldom leave. There are people nearby, but they don’t talk to you, don’t acknowledge your presence, even though many of them are just like you — oh wait! That’s Bernie Madoff. Crap! There’s got to be a better fantasy escape. What do you bet I come up with one by Saturday night?

Hey, this blog has been getting a lot of international visitors these days. Leave a message and say, Hi. I’d love to hear from you.

Okay I know that Saturday is the day AFTER Valentine’s Day, but surely you wouldn’t mind some songs about the myriad marvelous, memorable (and sometimes misguided) machinations of maintaining a meaningful relationship, right? What? You would? And stop calling you Shirley? Uh-oh…

PLAYLIST FOR “LOVE AND MARRIAGE…AND MUSIC” (2.1.14)

1 Feb

Every week I try to play some of the best marriages of words and music, singer and arranger, what’s written on the sheet music and what’s created in a singer’s mind. This week I also focussed on singers and musicians who are married in a more literal way. Whether they sing together, sing and play, sing and arrange, just about everyone I played is also husband and wife. And by including Mickey Rooney and his 8th wife, I was also able to reinforce the precept that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it
