The official International Jazz Appreciation Day is April 30th, though I think that’s a holiday which should be celebrated every day. Here’s as much celebration as I could squeeze into an hour. Now, it’s up to you to carry on!

This Saturday night be there to witness with your own ears the first-ever Turntable For One-Night Cafe Musical Smack-down.

For the past year, Will Duchon, host of The Night Cafe (Friday nights at 10:00 PM on WMNR) and I have been trading barbs — and I don’t mean trading women named Barbara so don’t even think of calling Gloria Allred!! Now it’s time to see who plays the best jazz vocals. Now it’s time to put up…or maybe it’s time to put down. I can’t remember which, but I’m sure there will be plenty of both when Will joins me in the studio this Saturday night on Turntable For One. Be there! Attendance will be taken!

Riddle can go fiddle.
Billy May? No Way.
This week I’m pulling all the strings
and telling the winds to go blow.
Listen? Do you hear voices?
It’s just going to be that kind of show!

Musical Speed Dating this week, or as I think of it: meets Musical Chairs! 30 singers in 60 minutes – you do the math.  No other radio program would attempt to do this, although probably for good reasons.

I usually play 10 or 11 singers each week. This week I’m going to double that number! But how???

This week I played a number of hit jazz tunes which were so popular that lyrics were added later — sometimes years later — so that singers could add them to their sets. “Holiday For Strings” is an outlier and an anomaly, but if you know Mandy’s version, you know why I couldn’t resist playing it.
