PLAYLIST FOR “CONTRAFACTUM” (3.28.20)

29 Mar

Contrafactum – it’s not just a word on Jeopardy.  Contrafactum are two different songs with the same melody but different lyrics. To jazz musicians, they are two tunes with the same chordal structure. (I tossed a few of those in for good measure – excuse the pun.) Who said educational radio is dead? Probably somebody who has listened to my show.

PLAYLIST FOR “SOCIAL DISTANCING” (3.21.20)

22 Mar

At times like these – perilous times, uncertain times – people turn to Turntable For One for information and advice. Clearly these are people who’ve never listened to the show before. But, okay, I can totally pretend to abandon my usual format and inveterate cynicism to talk about something serious. Social Distancing. What is it? How do I do it? And what can I do while I’m doing it? I think these songs demonstrate some of the actions and attitudes people should adopt to fill the long months ahead. I also threw in Stacey Kent and Rachael & Vilray to remind people of what we won’t be able to do, perhaps for a long, long time. A little salt never really hurts a wound, does it?

PLAYLIST FOR “ST. PADDY’S PARTY 2020” (3.14.20)

15 Mar

A St. Patrick’s Day party with Irish songs, Irish singers and musicians, a few Irish-American singers and composers sprinkled in, plus a Turntable For One tradition: me eating an entire bowl of Lucky Charms to celebrate the holiday. Could it get any better? Well, a stomach pump might have helped…although my audience may think that every week.

HINT FOR THIS WEEK’S MUSICAL THEME (3.12.20)

11 Mar

HINT:

What would a Turntable For One St. Patrick’s Day show be without Irish jazz singers, Irish-American jazz singers, and me eating an entire bowl of Lucky Charms on the air? It would be a lot healthier for me and my cholesterol for sure.

PLAYLIST FOR “JUST JOE” (3.07.20)

8 Mar

I planned this show months and months ago, just a show featuring some of my favorite songs, singers, and musicians all named Joe. At the time I thought Joe Biden was toast, not someone voters months later would be toasting. Okay, times are different now, but no way I’m throwing away a good idea – especially since they are coming with less and less frequency. To give an appearance of fairness, I tossed in a couple songs for Bernie, too.
