HINT FOR THIS SATURDAY NIGHT’S MUSICAL THEME (5.6.17)

3 May

HINT:

I can think of an old but still-popular axiom that applies to everything from romance to politics, car buying, clothing, and diet. It applies to just about everything except self-restraint. And I’ve thought of about 2 dozen songs the axiom applies to, also.

HINT:

I’ve been gone for a couple of weeks, but I’ll be back this Saturday just in time for Earth Day. How will I be celebrating this special day? By playing all the popular, toe-tapping, sing-a-long songs about renewable energy, global warming, and carbon footprints? Come on – do I look like Al Gore? I’ve got something else in mind.

HINT:

Let’s see…I’ve done Spring. I could do April Showers…but that’s only one song. April 15 is coming, so I could do Death and Taxes – no, I couldn’t get through it without weeping. Hey, wait – Saturday is April 1st! I wonder if that means anything…

HINT:

I was gone last week, but I’m back on Saturday with a musical tribute to something we’ve all been waiting for, hoping for, getting ready for – no, not Beyonce’s twins – I’m thinking something seasonal.

This is the 50th anniversary of the death of Billy Strayhorn. Billy probably won’t be celebrating, but is there anything we could do?

HINT:

Duke Ellington is supposed to have said that there are just two types of music – good and bad. Types of people? That’s not so simple. For instance, there are people who listen to Turntable For One and those who don’t (more to be pitied than censured). There are people who see the glass as half-full, while others see it as half-empty (I’m more worried about who’s been drinking from my glass). And I can think of yet another way to characterize the troubling gulf that separates people today. No way I’m going to fix it, but I think I can get two hours of great music out of it.

HINT:

Floods are raging, so are voters; people are being kept out of the country, kept out of bathrooms, and kept out of the loop. Surely I can get a musical theme out of all that important news. Oh, wait – isn’t it Oscar week?

It seems to me that you always and only have two choices. Doesn’t matter what it is, a question, a news story, a ballgame, an election – whatever  – you have the same two choices: laugh or cry. I’ll be flipping a coin on Saturday to see which we’ll do.
