For Mother’s Day, I only played singers who were also mothers. Guess what I’m going to do for Father’s Day. Can’t wait for Groundhog Day, too.

10 Jun

HINT:

Sure, let all those other radio and television shows try to sell you the Greatest Hits of the the 50s or the 60s or the Best of The Big Band Era or the hit of Engelbert Humperdinck (available on cassette only). Yawn. Are you ready for something different? Something unheard of and maybe even uncalled for? This week Turntable For One and only Turntable For One will be playing an exclusive Greatest Hits package, one you’ll want to hear over and over and over and over and over again.

HINT:

You’re eating in a Chinese restaurant and after the meal, the check arrives with the obligatory orange slices and several cellophane-wrapped fortune cookies. Once the orange slices are gone, you tear open the cellophane wrap to free your  fortune cookie. Just as you’re about to read your fortune, someone at the table says he has an idea that will be hilariously funny. I’ve got that same idea.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SPECIAL SHOW (5.30.15) #jazz #jazzradio #jazzvocalists #requestradio

27 May

You know how I struggle every week to come up with an interesting theme and then painstakingly pick perfect songs to fit that theme? Stop laughing! It could happen – but not this week. This week I’m opening up the phone lines and taking requests live on the air. Got a song or a performer you want to hear? Call me Saturday night and if I can find it and if I have time, I’ll play it right then and there. Or email your requests and dedications to me at turntable@wmnr.org I hope you’ll be listening Saturday night – because why should the NSA be the only ones listening to me?

20 May

HINT:

During past seasons I’ve presented musical tributes to the Prepositional Phrase, the Conditional Tense, and the Subordinate Clause, all in my effort to leave no audience behind. You might ask, Did these programs raise the literacy bar or did they just send more people to The Literacy Bar, which is probably a bar somewhere in San Diego? You might also ask, Isn’t it, in fact, impossible to have a “race to the top” when you’re trying to “level the playing field?” (B.T.W., if you’re so full of questions and queries, maybe you should think about getting your own blog and stop interrupting mine.) Am I ready to give up, to admit final defeat to all the forces dealing daily death blows to correct grammar? Uh, maybe not!

HINT:

This week’s show is an archive presentation. I might play Nancy Wilson but I won’t play Nancy LaMott.  I might play Ella Fitzgerald, but I won’t play Sarah Vaughan. I might play Nina Simone, but I definitely won’t play Billie Holiday. Find out why this Saturday night!

29 Apr

HINT:

Beginning Friday and for the next 7 days, my radio station, WMNR, will be celebrating its first-ever “Theme Week.” The theme this week will be “New Beginnings” and many of the broadcasters — classical, folk, and jazz — will be playing music that fits the theme. Will I bend and yield to such conformity? All I can say is, “Baaaa,”
