24 Apr

I was M.I.A. last week, but I’m hurrying back in time for Turntable For One’s annual celebration of International Jazz Day – with lots of great songs by great international jazz singers and musicians. Plus special messages from singers from around the world. We may not all sing in the same language, but we can all definitely speak Swing!

Forget Frank; Tony can take a hike; Carmen isn’t coming; and Nina’s a no-show. In fact, I gave all American jazz singers the night off and played singers from around the world to celebrate (a couple days early) International Jazz Day. My special thanks to Carol Welsman (Canada), Sarah Lancman (France), Sinne Eeg (Denmark), Tom Rust (U.K.), and Susie Arioli (Canada) for recording greetings to the Turntable For One audience and introducing a song or performer they admire. Special thanks, also, to Delicatessen Jazz for letting me give the world premiere of a song from their new, soon-to-be-released CD.

It’s that time again! Time for me to adjust my meds? Yes, but that’s not what I was going to say. It’s time to celebrate International Jazz Day again by giving American-born singers the night off, by featuring some of the best jazz singers from around the world, and by welcoming about a half-dozen special guests. (If you’re not there, we’ll talk about you.)

International Jazz Day is April 30th, but I couldn’t wait. Here’s a sampling of some wonderful jazz singers from around the world. Check out Jazz Day events at Jazzday.com. There must be something going on near you, so be sure to support this music we love.

It’s also almost Toots Thielemans’ 92nd birthday. He decided recently to retire, so I especially wanted to celebrate his birthday, his long career, and his music which always came straight from his heart into his harmonica. Thanks, Toots!
