Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! Do you love songs about falling in love? Being in love? Staying in love? If you answered Yes to any or all of those questions, you really had a rough flight on last night’s show. Because I love songs about heartache and heartbreak. So my V. When I was a kid, the questions I asked were Who, What, Where, and How. Mostly because I was just trying to figure out if Col. Mustard killed Miss Scarlet with the candlestick in the conservatory. (Who knew there was so much murder at Julliard?) Well, now I mostly just ask two questions: Where – as in Where did I leave my glasses? And When – as in When did we have that conversation? So because my show is nothing if not self-involved and self-referential, I played two hours of Where or When songs. BTW: I never found my glasses.

PLAYLIST FOR “ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARTY” – AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (3.12.22)

I couldn’t make it to the station this week, but did that mean no St. Patrick’s Day party this year? Nope. I dug this show from 2019 out of the archives. This is what I wrote about the show back then:

It’s been a Turntable For One St. Patrick’s Day tradition for me to play some jazz singers from Ireland, a few Irish-American (or at least half-Irish-American) singers and musicians, and – always a highlight – for me to eat some traditional Irish food on the air – which, of course, means a bowl of Lucky Charms. And, as if hearing me struggle and choke wasn’t incentive enough, I made this year’s party a celebration of the songs of Jimmy McHugh, the wonderful Irish-American composer.

I divided the show into two parts this week, one part the traditional Turntable For One party for St. Patrick’s Day, replete with Irish singers and musicians, Irish-American singers and musicians, and the most important Turntable for One tradition of all: me eating a bowl of Lucky Charms on the air. To celebrate the fact that this was my first live show from the station in a long, long while, in the second part of the show I shared some of the music that helped get me through the last 12 months of sheltering in place. Forget Frank; Tony can take a hike; Carmen isn’t coming; and Nina’s a no-show. In fact, I gave all American jazz singers the night off and played singers from around the world to celebrate (a couple days early) International Jazz Day. My special thanks to Carol Welsman (Canada), Sarah Lancman (France), Sinne Eeg (Denmark), Tom Rust (U.K.), and Susie Arioli (Canada) for recording greetings to the Turntable For One audience and introducing a song or performer they admire.
