PLAYLIST FOR “SPRING HAS SPRUNG 2023” (3.25.23)

26 Mar

What do these things have in common: a pogo stick, a diving board, a trampoline?  Three things I wouldn’t be caught dead on? True but not what I was thinking. The three worst golden anniversary gifts? Also true but I couldn’t get two hours of music out of that. Answer: they all have springs! And that’s what I celebrated with two hours of Spring songs, with a nod to Spring planting with Mark Jennett, Spring Fever with Gretje Angell, and Spring cleaning with Kevin Mahogany. Proving once again that Turntable For One comes in like a lamb and goes out like a lamb chop.

PLAYLIST FOR “ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARTY 2023” (3.18.23)

19 Mar

March 17th was National Sleep Day – the last holiday in the world I’d like my audience to celebrate. Fortunately, it was also St. Patrick’s Day. That’s more like it. So I presented a mixture of laughter and tears, a perfect combination for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Although, in truth, most of the tears were mine because once again I maintained my tradition of eating a celebratory bowl of Lucky Charms on the air. (Lucky Charms are now gluten-free. It didn’t help.)  Still, it was a grand night of Irish and Irish-American singers and a chance to celebrate the music of Jimmy McHugh.

Usually I play 20-24 different singers, musicians, Mystery Vocalists each week. This week I challenged myself to play more. My goal was 57 different artists. PLAYLIST FOR “WHERE OR WHEN” (2.4.23)

5 Feb

When I was a kid, the questions I asked were Who, What, Where, and How. Mostly because I was just trying to figure out if Col. Mustard killed Miss Scarlet with the candlestick in the conservatory. (Who knew there was so much murder at Julliard?) Well, now I mostly just ask two questions: Where – as in Where did I leave my glasses? And When – as in When did we have that conversation?  So because my show is nothing if not self-involved and self-referential, I played two hours of Where or When songs. PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO DIRECT ADDRESS” – AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST (BETTER KNOWN AS A RERUN) (1.21.23)

22 Jan

I didn’t make it to the station this week, so I played a show from when I was younger and the world was easier to understand. Okay, just when I was younger. Here’s what I said about it the first time around:

“‘What we got here is failure to communicate,’ said one of the most reprehensible yet prescient movie villains of all time. That line of dialogue has been playing frequently in my head these days. How can we communicate better? Of course, my answer to this and so many other questions is simple: better grammar. So in my continuing effort to leave no listener behind, I made a case for the vocative case, another term for the function of grammar known as direct address. All of the songs served as examples, using a name, a term of endearment, or a feeling to grab the attention of the intended object of communication. If only the rest of the world would function according to the orderly, predictable precepts in my dog-eared high school grammar book.”

PLAYLIST FOR “QUIZ: WHO WROTE THAT – THE GENDER REVEAL EDITION”” (1.14.23)

16 Jan

Who wrote these songs? A man or a woman? Don’t think of this as a test. Think of it as a provocative little quiz. Sure, there are right and wrong answers. Plus, how you answer does reflect how much you know about music; and what unconscious biases you have; and whether you’re a decent human being or a total disgrace. But it wasn’t a test. It also was some of my favorite music.

PLAYLIST FOR “TESTING POSITIVE” (1.7.23)

8 Jan

All my life people have been telling me, You’re so negative? Why don’t you try to be more positive. Well, for the past month I have been positive – and I’ve been miserable!  Because I have been testing positive on one damned Covid test after another. Those tests have been the most depressing tests I’ve taken since the Myers-Briggs Personality test. But, finally, after a month, I was back, testing negative – and that’s good, right?  But that’s not the way things are supposed to be. Being Negative – that’s not good.  It’s bad. Being positive?  That’s good.  I’m very confused. So I brought a bunch of songs to see which ones Test Positive – in a good way ! -and it was good to be back at my Turntable For One.
