PLAYLIST FOR THE DESERT ISLAND GAME (2.4.12)

5 Feb

This week we played the Desert Island game — not the one where you fantasize about a dozen androgynous pixies bringing you to a desert island where you and they play sudoku all day and they say you have nice hair. (And just how often do you play that game?) I mean the game where I play two version of the same song and you have to choose which of the two you’d take to a desert island to listen to for the rest of your life — with or without androgynous pixies.

Hope you can get back in time for next week’s show.

HINT FOR THIS WEEK’S THEME (2.4.12)

1 Feb

HINT:

They say that “no man is an island,” though I think someone overlooked Dom Deluise. Still, while listening to this week’s show, you might start to feel the sand between your toes and hear waves lapping the beach. But try harder to stay awake because this week, more than usual, you’ll be making decisions about the music I play.

Turntable For One – Saturday night – 10:00 PM!  Live radio on WMNR and wmnr.org

PLAYLIST FOR “NICKNAMES” (1.28.12)

29 Jan

“A rose by any other name” would still be a tiresome cliche, but all of tonight’s featured performers — singers and musicians — are frequently called by other names. • WHEN LIGHTS ARE LOW / Sarah Vaughan / “The Complete Roulette Studio Sessions”
  • BEAUTIFUL FRIENDSHIP / Nat Cole & George Shearing / “Nat Cole Sings/George Shearing Plays”
  • LET’S FALL IN LOVE / Diane Schuur & Maynard Ferguson / “Swingin’ For Shuur”

  • LITTLE UNHAPPY BOY / Nancy Wilson & Cannonball Adderley / “Nancy Willson & Cannonball Adderley”
  • SWEET SLUMBER / Jimmy Witherspoon & Jack McDuff / “The Blues Is Now”

A music tribute to the word association test? Not even close. 11 reasons why I never win at Words With Friends? Hey, let’s not get personal.

Listen for the answers to this and at least a dozen other troubling questions, plus an hour of great jazz and jazz vocals on Turntable For One.
