PLAYLIST FOR “UNHAPPY ENDINGS” (AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST) (8.21.21)

22 Aug

I’m almost back – but I’m not quite ready to bring my vacation to an untimely end, so I’m playing a couple weeks of shows from the archive. I’ll be back live on Sept. 4th! Here’s what I said about last night’s show when it was live  a year and a half ago:

Do you like stores with happy endings? Well, this show wasn’t going to make you very happy. Unless, of course, you like wonderful singers and musicians interpreting sad songs (at all kinds of tempos). Happy now?

PLAYLIST FOR “STOP, LOOK, AND LISTEN” (4.17.21)

18 Apr

In addition to playing songs about Stop, Look, & Listen, I spent much of the hour asking anyone who would listen to stop and look into their wallets – I mean into their hearts and make a donation to the WMNR Spring Fundraising Drive. It wasn’t all pleading and begging. After I played Billie Holiday’s blown Take 7 of Glad To Be Unhappy, I  gave the audience the opportunity to make a couple of donations if they wanted to hear the completed version. A rewarding time was had by all – especially the radio station.

PLAYLIST FOR “VIOLENCE WEEK” – A SHOW FROM THE ARCHIVES (2.27.21)

1 Mar

I spent the week wandering through the Turntable For One archives and found this show from Nov. 2019. It certainly made me nostalgic for doing a live show. Sigh… This is how I introduced the playlist back then:

If you ask me – and I’m going to pretend that you have – nothing stirs the heart and lifts our spirits like the men and women who, through practice and persistence, have mastered the art of violence — hey, wait a minute. That’s not what I’m typing! How do I turn off auto-fill? I mean VIOLINS! All of the music this week features a violin or a string section, or a jazz or classical violinist, plus a couple singers who also play violin. All in all, it was a very satisfying auditory discussion of string theory.

PLAYLIST FOR “UNIMPEACHABLE LOVE SONGS” (2.13.21)

14 Feb

After doing about a dozen Valentine’s Day shows over the years, I needed something new for this year’s theme. Out of the blue this theme came to me. I don’t know why I thought of it. The show was a mix of love songs, plus a few Valentine gifts to myself and a number of song dedications from the audience. In the end, I believe I acquitted myself well. PLAYLIST FOR “REQUEST WEEK” – TURNTABLE FOR ONE SEASON 11 PREMIERE (9.5.20)

6 Sep

I kicked off my 11th season by kicking back and letting the audience do most of the work. Every song (until the last) was a request from someone out there in radioland. PLAYLIST FOR “MAKING TURNTABLE FOR ONE MORE COLORFUL” (8.15.20)

16 Aug

I get lots of requests from listeners, most of which I can’t fulfill because I sold my dueling pistols many years ago. When someone suggested that I try to make the program more colorful, immediately after my legal team informed me that I couldn’t sue for slander, I decided to give it a go. Below is my colorful solution – songs and/or singers or musicians with colorful names. (I know that Billie Holiday isn’t a color. But you know who took the solo on that cut? Urbie Green!)

PLAYLIST FOR “LAUGHTER & TEARS” (12.7.19)

9 Dec

I’m sure I’ve mentioned a few dozen times that I’m a “glass half-empty” kind of guy. Not only do I think the glass is half-empty, I worry about who’s been drinking from my glass. I can find something sad about an IRS refund. And don’t get me started about “brown paper packages tied up with strings.” Don’t you think that’s setting the bar for happiness a little low? So, of course,  when I do a show about Laughter, I’m also going to do a show about Tears. It makes perfect sense to me – and, after all, it’s my show.
