PLAYLIST FOR “APRIL FOOLS! 2023” (4.1.23)

Sure, I promised my audience a special April 1st show with a new recording of Rod Stewart singing “Nessun Dorma,” a YouTube video of The Boy’s Choir of Galway Cathedral singing in Gaelic, “99 Bottles Of Beer On The Wall,” plus a bootleg from a Joni Mitchell recording session where Joni is aiming a profanity-lace rant at her assistant who gave her the wrong bottle of spring water. Okay, that stuff I couldn’t deliver. But a couple hours of songs about fools and foolishness was a foolproof formula for a great April Fools Day show.

Taking baby steps – isn’t that what I was doing in my driveway after the last snow storm? Out of the mouths of babes – isn’t that why we put bibs on them? Sleep like a baby – I’m sure my audience can relate to that. Throw the baby out with the bath water – doesn’t that just mean it’s time to get your eyes examined? In addition to playing songs about Stop, Look, & Listen, I spent much of the hour asking anyone who would listen to stop and look into their wallets – I mean into their hearts and make a donation to the WMNR Spring Fundraising Drive. It wasn’t all pleading and begging. After I played Billie Holiday’s blown Take 7 of Glad To Be Unhappy, I  gave the audience the opportunity to make a couple of donations if they wanted to hear the completed version. A rewarding time was had by all – especially the radio station.

PLAYLIST FOR “VIOLENCE WEEK” – A SHOW FROM THE ARCHIVES (2.27.21)

I spent the week wandering through the Turntable For One archives and found this show from Nov. 2019. It certainly made me nostalgic for doing a live show. Sigh… This is how I introduced the playlist back then:

If you ask me – and I’m going to pretend that you have – nothing stirs the heart and lifts our spirits like the men and women who, through practice and persistence, have mastered the art of violence — hey, wait a minute. After doing about a dozen Valentine’s Day shows over the years, I needed something new for this year’s theme. Out of the blue this theme came to me. I don’t know why I thought of it. The show was a mix of love songs, plus a few Valentine gifts to myself and a number of song dedications from the audience. In the end, I believe I acquitted myself well. And, acquittal is all the matters, right?

I kicked off my 11th season by kicking back and letting the audience do most of the work. Every song (until the last) was a request from someone out there in radioland. About half-way through the show, I started to fret that their choices were so good, maybe they don’t need me at all. Lesson: Always watch out for unintended consequences.

I get lots of requests from listeners, most of which I can’t fulfill because I sold my dueling pistols many years ago. When someone suggested that I try to make the program more colorful, immediately after my legal team informed me that I couldn’t sue for slander, I decided to give it a go.
