PLAYLIST FOR “VIOLENCE WEEK” – A SHOW FROM THE ARCHIVES (2.27.21)

1 Mar

I spent the week wandering through the Turntable For One archives and found this show from Nov. 2019. It certainly made me nostalgic for doing a live show. Sigh… This is how I introduced the playlist back then:

If you ask me – and I’m going to pretend that you have – nothing stirs the heart and lifts our spirits like the men and women who, through practice and persistence, have mastered the art of violence — hey, wait a minute. That’s not what I’m typing! How do I turn off auto-fill? I mean VIOLINS! All of the music this week features a violin or a string section, or a jazz or classical violinist, plus a couple singers who also play violin. All in all, it was a very satisfying auditory discussion of string theory.

PLAYLIST FOR “MAKING TURNTABLE FOR ONE MORE COLORFUL” (8.15.20)

16 Aug

I get lots of requests from listeners, most of which I can’t fulfill because I sold my dueling pistols many years ago. When someone suggested that I try to make the program more colorful, immediately after my legal team informed me that I couldn’t sue for slander, I decided to give it a go. Below is my colorful solution – songs and/or singers or musicians with colorful names. (I know that Billie Holiday isn’t a color. But you know who took the solo on that cut? Urbie Green!)

PLAYLIST FOR “SARCASM OR NOT SARCASM: A TURNTABLE FOR ONE QUIZ” (5.2.20)

3 May

In times of trouble, people turn to Turntable For One for answers. Yes, it’s inexplicable to me, too. For instance…

Dear Turntable For One – I hear there is light at the end of the tunnel. Should I insert that light into my body.     TFO: No – wrong tunnel.

Dear Turntable For One – Can I mix Mountain Dew and Clorox?     TFO: If you’re drinking Mountain Dew, you don’t need the Clorox.

Dear Turntable For One – How can I tell if a politician is really making a sarcastic joke and not just saying something idiotic?   TFO:  Sarcastic jokes and politicians don’t usually go together. But we’ve been hearing a lot about sarcastic jokes in the White House lately. Time for a refresher course on recognizing true sarcasm when you hear it.

(Warning: The quiz included some trick questions.)

Explain to me again why we created a holiday to honor an ugly, destructive rodent and a misguided superstition while continuing to discredit the value of scientific facts in our lives? It seems now we even disagree about agreeing to disagree. Things are totally out of control. Don’t you agree? So as a person with a microphone (when I remember to turn it on), don’t I have a solemn responsibility to try to provide some clarity and maybe even some answers? Of course I do. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to do it. Instead I presented a couple hours of people arguing and contradicting each other and never finding common ground. You want cumbaya? Watch Dr. Phil. PLAYLISTS FOR “SPEED DATING” AND “NIGHT OF THE LIVING INSOMNIACS” (ARCHIVE SHOWS) (12.3.16)

5 Dec

Didn’t do a live show this week, but found a couple of gems hidden in the archives.

First – Musical Speed Dating,  or as I think of it: Match.com meets Musical Chairs! 30 singers in 60 minutes – you do the math.  No other radio program would attempt to do this,  probably for good reasons.

Second: Night Of The Living Insomnaics! Ok, let’s dispense with the jokes about how can I have insomnia when I’m always putting audiences to sleep. That makes me yawn, okay? But not because I’m tired. Still, pretty impressive how many great singers and songs have dealt with the subject.
