PLAYLIST FOR “LIGHTBULB MOMENTS” (11.13.21)

15 Nov

They don’t happen often and they don’t happen to everyone. But if one does happen to you, it could change your life. Of course I’m talking about an IRS audit. Of course I’m not talking about an IRS audit. I’m talking about those out-of-the-blue, eye opening moments of inspiration or maybe self-discovery. One thing: they’re always moments of clarity. I don’t know what you call them: Serendipity? Intuition? Divine Intervention? Years and years of therapy? I called them something else this week. I called them Lightbulb Moments because that’s how I could get two-hours of music out of them – tossing in a few personal lightbulb moments that changed my own musical life.

24 Oct

We all have them. We may try to hide them with varying degrees of success or failure because – let’s face it – they totally reveal us, they embarrass us, and the worst ones can  actually define us for the rest of our lives. Of course I’m talking about our high school yearbook photos. Of course I’m not talking about our high school yearbook photos. I’m talking about Bad Habits. So it was nothing but Bad Habits this week – ranging from binge watching to smoking, drinking, co-dependence. magical thinking, and more. 12 Sep

First show of my 12th season. It was great to be back. But, as reluctant as I am to admit it, the day was certainly not about me. It was September 11th. PLAYLIST FOR “WINNING SINGERS-LOSING SONGS” (4.24.21)

25 Apr

It’s time for the Oscars again. And, yes, you can fault the Oscars for being over-the-top – over the top egos, over the top vanity, over the top self-adulation. On the other hand, what do people who don’t win usually say? “It’s an honor just to be nominated.” And I can’t remember anyone at the Oscars insisting the voting was rigged or asking for a recount. I’m just saying… So in honor of the Academy Awards, I brought back a longtime Turntable for One tradition, listening to some wonderful Oscar nominated songs. Not the winners! Instead I presented a couple of hours of winning singers singing Oscar losing songs.

PLAYLIST FOR “STOP, LOOK, AND LISTEN” (4.17.21)

18 Apr

In addition to playing songs about Stop, Look, & Listen, I spent much of the hour asking anyone who would listen to stop and look into their wallets – I mean into their hearts and make a donation to the WMNR Spring Fundraising Drive. It wasn’t all pleading and begging. After I played Billie Holiday’s blown Take 7 of Glad To Be Unhappy, I  gave the audience the opportunity to make a couple of donations if they wanted to hear the completed version. A rewarding time was had by all – especially the radio station.

PLAYLIST FOR “VIOLENCE WEEK” – A SHOW FROM THE ARCHIVES (2.27.21)

1 Mar

I spent the week wandering through the Turntable For One archives and found this show from Nov. 2019. It certainly made me nostalgic for doing a live show. Sigh… This is how I introduced the playlist back then:

If you ask me – and I’m going to pretend that you have – nothing stirs the heart and lifts our spirits like the men and women who, through practice and persistence, have mastered the art of violence — hey, wait a minute. That’s not what I’m typing! How do I turn off auto-fill? I mean VIOLINS! All of the music this week features a violin or a string section, or a jazz or classical violinist, plus a couple singers who also play violin. All in all, it was a very satisfying auditory discussion of string theory.

PLAYLIST FOR “UNIMPEACHABLE LOVE SONGS” (2.13.21)

14 Feb

After doing about a dozen Valentine’s Day shows over the years, I needed something new for this year’s theme. Out of the blue this theme came to me. I don’t know why I thought of it. The show was a mix of love songs, plus a few Valentine gifts to myself and a number of song dedications from the audience. In the end, I believe I acquitted myself well. PLAYLIST FOR “DESERT ISLAND GAME” (1.30.21)

1 Feb

It’s Winter. It’s cold. Snow is coming. A lot of it. And all the pandemic doctors and scientists are telling us it’s always dark just before it gets even darker! Who’s ready for a desert island? Put your hands down. I’m talking about me, not you. So I spent the show deciding which music or which versions to take to this desert island. I also spent time asking people to go to wmnr.org to become a member or make a pledge during the station’s Winter Fundraising Drive. I raised a good chunk of money and, I hope I raised hopes that some day soon we will be able to go to desert islands again. We can hope.

PLAYLIST FOR “MOOD” (1.23.21)

24 Jan

If i were posting on Instagram or Facebook, I could just post an appropriate photo with one single word, MOOD. That doesn’t work so well on radio, so instead I played songs that captured my mood this week as I watched everything that happened, everything that (thank God) didn’t happen, and indulged in the feeling of a new beginning and new hope.
