PLAYLIST FOR “LAUGHING AT LIFE” (AN ARCHIVE SHOW) (11.11.17)

13 Nov

Last Saturday, a trip down memory lane with an archive show from last February. I’ll be back in this studio this week!

It’s true that smiling requires more muscles than frowning, which must be why smiling always tires me so quickly. Still, considering all that we know and fear about the world today, I thought it was worth spending a couple hours focusing on laughing and smiling. SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN

What’s the difference between a Dream and a Plan? Well, I’ve been having a lot of bad dreams lately, a lot of bad plans, too. Dreams aren’t real and they don’t come true…of course, most of my plans don’t come true, either. You know, maybe there’s no difference at all. Both of them end in disappointment and heartache – but not when singers like the ones I played are singing about plans they’re making!

PLAYLIST FOR “TWO SHOWS FROM THE ARCHIVE” (2.27.16) #jazz #jazzradio #jazzsingers

27 Feb

I played two shows from the archive while I took a Saturday off to gather my thoughts. I should have brought a leaf rake. First up was “All Talk Radio!” a show from last fall after an exciting two weeks at Pundit Training Camp where I learned the valuable lessons all pundits and news commentators know, such as: it’s not what you have to say, but how long it takes you to say it. Oh, I could have talked on and on and on and on about this, but I filled up most of the hour with some great songs about talking.

SONG TITLE  /  Artist  /  CD Or Album Title

  • HAPPY TALK  /  Nancy Wilson & Cannonball Adderley/  “Nancy Wilson & Cannonball Adderley”
  • TALK TO ME, TALK TO ME  /   Freddie Cole  /  “Talk To Me”
  • TALK TO ME BABY  /  Cleo Laine  /  “Quintessential Cleo”
  • YOUR MIND IS ON VACATION  /  Mose Allison  /  “Lounge Live From The Mountain Stage”
  • GIRL TALK  /  Holly Cole  /  “Girl Talk”
  • TALK TO ME  /  Frank Sinatra  /  “The Complete Capitol Singles”
  • TOO HOT FOR WORDS  /  Lily Frost  /  “Too Hot For Words”
  • THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND  /  (Mystery Vocalist)  /  Bernie Sanders
  • SHOW ME  /  Karrin Allyson  /  “Daydream”
  • CAN WE TALK  /  Ben Sidran  /  “Don’t Cry For No Hipster”
  • EVERYBODY’S TALKIN’ AT ME  /  Donna Lewis  /  “Brand New Day”
  • I DON’T WANT TO HEAR IT ANYMORE  /  Mark Jennett  /  “The Way I Am”
  • WORDS  /  The Real Group  /  “Live In Japan”

The second show, “The Complaint Department,” first aired 3 years ago. The only complaint I want to hear after the show is from your neighbors because you were playing the music too loud.

SONG TITLE  /  Artist  /  CD or Album Title

  • BUT NOT FOR ME  /  Gladys Knight  /  “Before Me”
  • HOW COULD YOU DO A THING LIKE THAT  /  Frank Sinatra  /  “Come Swing With Me”
  • RAIN JUST RAIN  /  Rigmor Gustafsson Quintet  /  “In The Light Of Day”
  • I WISH I DIDN’T LOVE YOU SO  /  Steven Pasquale  /  “Somethin’ Like Love”
  • KISSING BUG  /  Hetty Kate  /  “Kissing Bug”
  • YOU’RE TALKING TOO LOUD  /  Dave Tull  /  “I Just Want To Get Paid”
  • TELEPHONE SONG  /  Stan Getz & Astrud  Gilberto  /  “The Girl From Ipanema”
  • WHININ’ BOY BLUES  /  (Mystery Vocalist)  /  Hugh Laurie  /  “Let Them Talk”
  • WHY DON’T YOU DO RIGHT  /  Delicatessen  /  “My Baby Just Cares For Me”
  • CAUGHT YOU SPREADING YOUR LOVE AROUND  /  Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet  /  “Hustlin’ For A Gig”
  • EVERYTHING HAPPENS TO ME  /  Ella Fitzgerald  /  “Hello Love”
  • SINCE I FELL FOR YOU  /  Mark Murphy & The Metropole Orch.  /  “The Dream”
  • PARIS MISMATCH  /  (Theme Music)  / Cody Owen Stine
