PLAYLIST FOR “MONARCHY MANIA” (5.6.23)

7 May

Something historic happened today; something that hasn’t happened in 70 years.  No, I’m not talking about me getting  back on the uneven parallel bars. I’m talking about the coronation of a new king and queen in the United Kingdom.  Whatever you think of the royal family, I thought it was a relief to focus on pomp and circumstance for a few hours instead of pomposity and circumstantial evidence. To continue my good feelings, I brought a bowl of Royal butterscotch pudding and a bun with Royal icing for snacks. I wrote my opening on my trusty Royal 10 typewriter, and I hummed the Royal Garden Blues on my drive to the radio station. Clearly I was feeling a royal flush, so I celebrated Monarchy Mania his week with lots of songs about royalty and songs by British and American music royalty.

PLAYLIST FOR “FRENCH KISSES” (4.29.23)

1 May

Let’s be honest. France has seen some dark days. Some examples: Joan of Arc?  Where was Gloria Allred when we needed her? And you can’t talk about  dark days without Napoleon — the man not the dessert.  Or Vichy – the government, not the water.  And Freedom Fries – wait, no, that was our dumb mistake. And today the French are suffering through another tragic indignity – raising the national retirement age from 62 to 64. Well. I think we need to show our support and not just our incredulity for what the brave but – not over-worked -people of France going through. I presented a celebration of French singers and musicians, french songs, and songs about France. That’s right, for two hours I gave out out French Kisses this week on Turntable For One.

PLAYLIST FOR “12TH ANNUAL ‘MUSIC TO BE THANKFUL FOR’ SHOW” (11/27/21)

29 Nov

Definitely one of my favorite shows every year because it gives me a chance to highlight music I’m thankful for and to salute some of my musical heroes. This year: Tony Bennett, Stephen Sondheim, and Dave Frishberg. I also invite other WMNR broadcasters (B) and some of my favorite singers (S) to give a Thanksgiving greeting, talk about and then introduce music that’s important to them. And as if that weren’t enough, because this show always falls near my birthday (this year exactly on my birthday!), it’s also “family night” at Turntable For One when my wife and son join me at the radio station to offer their banter, eye rolls, and musical selections. This year my wife, Megan, was in the studio and introduced a song written by our son, Cody and expressed our grief at the loss of Sondheim. This year our son reported in from Columbus, Ohio, his current stop as he music directs and conducts the national tour of Hadestown.

PLAYLIST FOR A SALUTE TO DADS – AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (6.19.21)

20 Jun

I started my Father’s Day celebrating early and didn’t do a live show. Instead, I pulled last year’s Dad’s Day show from the archive. This is what I said about the show a year ago:

My annual salute to Dads with songs about dads, songs sung and written by dads, songs I think dads would/should sing, songs of fatherly advice, some songs I gave myself just as a Father’s Day present, plus a couple stories about my dad and about being a dad myself. In short, another wonderfully self-indulgent show. I am content.

PLAYLIST FOR “ELLA FITZGERALD CHALLENGES THE WORLD” – AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (5.1.21)

2 May

This week I played a show from another world ago. No, I don’t mean we listened to an episode of Gunsmoke. I reached into the archives and dusted off a show from 2016. This is what I wrote about it back then:

This week Ella Fitzgerald took on all comers in a head-to-head, well, really a voice-to-voice competition. She sang standards and some surprising duets; she even challenged Sarah Vaughan in a “forgetting the lyrics” competition (Sarah won) and challenged Shirley Horn to a “slow singing” competition (Shirley won). But it was impossible to listen to this show without marveling at Ella’s musicality and her warmth and without feeling fortunate that we had her for so long.

Definitely one of my favorite shows every year because it gives me a chance to highlight music I’m thankful for and invite other WMNR broadcasters (B) and some of my favorite singers (S) to talk about and introduce music that’s important to them. This year was different. My wife, Megan, was in the studio with me; our son, Cody, whom we saw at Thanksgiving via FaceTime (just like so many families this year), reported in from the safety of his NYC apartment. Stay well. PLAYLIST FOR “THE TRUTH ABOUT MEN” (10.6.18)

7 Oct

Since we learned this week – much to my surprise – that it’s a scary time for men and that men are the true victims here, I had to do something to support all these poor unfortunate men, victims of an unfair society that never gives them any power nor respect. But what could I do being just a simple and largely ignored radio host? How about a testosterone-filled evening of man-splaining, man-rationalizing, and man-boasting songs, plus beer, of course, with an occasional view from a woman’s perspective?
