PLAYLIST FOR “SPRING HAS SPRUNG 2023” (3.25.23)

26 Mar

What do these things have in common: a pogo stick, a diving board, a trampoline?  Three things I wouldn’t be caught dead on? True but not what I was thinking. The three worst golden anniversary gifts? Also true but I couldn’t get two hours of music out of that. Answer: they all have springs! And that’s what I celebrated with two hours of Spring songs, with a nod to Spring planting with Mark Jennett, Spring Fever with Gretje Angell, and Spring cleaning with Kevin Mahogany. Proving once again that Turntable For One comes in like a lamb and goes out like a lamb chop.

PLAYLIST FOR “EASY DOES IT” (3.4.23)

You know how I work very hard planning this show every week? Some of my audience was  thinking,”Work harder.”  And some were thinking, “This show is planned?”  And the rest of them were likely thinking, “Will you get through the opening so we can listen to some music?”  The point was this week instead of working hard, I took it easy. PLAYLIST FOR “FUN WITH PHOBIAS” (6.4.22)

6 Jun

We all have them. Maybe we call them quirks or superstitions. Let’s call them by their real names – fears and phobias. Fear of Heights – it’s called Acrophobia.  Dentrophobia – fear of Dentists. Even I have a phobia: The Fear of Howie Mandel suddenly showing up at my door. I’m sure there’s a name of that but I haven’t found it yet. Most of our phobias are manageable and many are actually curable. Here’s my question: are they exploitable, by which I mean could I get two hours of music out of them? Songs about phobias, songs to help overcome phobias – two hours of immersion therapy in swing.

PLAYLIST FOR “STOP, LOOK, AND LISTEN” (4.17.21)

18 Apr

In addition to playing songs about Stop, Look, & Listen, I spent much of the hour asking anyone who would listen to stop and look into their wallets – I mean into their hearts and make a donation to the WMNR Spring Fundraising Drive. It wasn’t all pleading and begging. After I played Billie Holiday’s blown Take 7 of Glad To Be Unhappy, I  gave the audience the opportunity to make a couple of donations if they wanted to hear the completed version. PLAYLIST FOR “HALLOWEEN PARTY 2019” (10.26.19)

27 Oct

My Tenth Annual Halloween party with more treats than tricks. I got to play my favorite haunting melodies with  a number of them sung by some of my favorite ghosts. Of course, my favorite part every year is the game of being visited by trick or treaters and having to guess their costumes. Instead giving them candy, I hand out appropriate songs. PLAYLIST FOR “GIVE & TAKE WEEK” (10.12.19)

13 Oct

The two words, give and take, are frequently associated with my show, although usually in the form of “Give me a break!” and “I’m going to take a nap.” But this week all of the songs had either the words or the concepts of giving and taking. Plus it was the audience’s turn to get involved because it was Fall Fundraising week at WMNR, Fine Arts Radio (wmnr.org); so with phone and on-line pledges people put their money where my mouth is, supporting the show and this wonderful anomaly of a radio station. Thanks!
