PLAYLIST FOR “APRIL FOOLS! 2023” (4.1.23)

1 Apr

Sure, I promised my audience a special April 1st show with a new recording of Rod Stewart singing “Nessun Dorma,” a YouTube video of The Boy’s Choir of Galway Cathedral singing in Gaelic, “99 Bottles Of Beer On The Wall,” plus a bootleg from a Joni Mitchell recording session where Joni is aiming a profanity-lace rant at her assistant who gave her the wrong bottle of spring water. Okay, that stuff I couldn’t deliver. But a couple hours of songs about fools and foolishness was a foolproof formula for a great April Fools Day show.

PLAYLIST FOR “AN EVENING WITH FRANK” (AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST) (10.8.22)

9 Oct

Couldn’t do a live show this week, so I led my audience on a trip down memory lane…which, admittedly, is becoming a shorter and shorter trip for me. Here’s what I wrote when the show was first broadcast.

He gave us so much wonderful, unforgettable music. Wait, you’re thinking of that Frank? I was thinking of Frank Loesser and I tried to squeeze as many gems in his voluminous songbook from movies, Broadway, and popular song into a couple hours as I could. But before the Evening With Frank began, I opened the show again with another song from a young Ukrainian jazz singer who remains (as of this posting) safe and even hopeful in Kyiv.

PLAYLIST FOR “SPRING BREAK” (3.26.22)

27 Mar

I desperately need a break. I desperately need something to celebrate. I tried to combine the two with a tribute to Spring. But not without first opening the show with another Ukrainian jazz artist. PLAYLIST FOR A SALUTE TO DADS – AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (6.19.21)

20 Jun

I started my Father’s Day celebrating early and didn’t do a live show. Instead, I pulled last year’s Dad’s Day show from the archive. This is what I said about the show a year ago:

My annual salute to Dads with songs about dads, songs sung and written by dads, songs I think dads would/should sing, songs of fatherly advice, some songs I gave myself just as a Father’s Day present, plus a couple stories about my dad and about being a dad myself. PLAYLIST FOR “TOWN & COUNTRY” (2.6.21)

7 Feb

Remember the story we were taught when we were little? It was the story of the country mouse, cautious and practical, and the city mouse, worldly and sophisticated. I know my teachers were trying to teach us to be like the common sense country mouse. And I was never able to convince them that the two mice would be indistinguishable when caught in a sticky trap. And so the debate about which is better – living in the country or living in the city – has gone on and on and on. And it went on during my show, too. Did I throw light on this debate or just throw shade? Did I answer the questions or question the answers? Really? You gotta be kidding. I just tried to fill two hours with songs about the city and songs about the country. Plus a shout-out to the Super Bowl cities. (I let Gloria Estefan represent Florida because I can’t think of a single song about FL or any of its cities I want to hear.)

I couldn’t get to the studio this week. It turns out that GPS is useless when you’re taking an ego trip. So I went deep into the archives for a show that, sadly, is as relevant today as it was a few years ago. Maybe more. PLAYLIST FOR “HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY, NAT COLE!” (9.21.19)

21 Sep

Nat Cole would be 100 years old this year if he hadn’t died when he was 45. I suppose I should say something about how his music has lived on or how his legacy has lived on or how he has influenced so many singers and pianists. But, really, I just wanted to play some music I wanted to hear. In other words, it was business as usual at Turntable For One. But I was surprised to find so many tribute albums and pleased to include some from singers in Sweden, Belgium, and Mexico. Also gave a 100th birthday shout-out to George Shearing. But I don’t think he was listening.
