PLAYLIST FOR “YEAR IN REVIEW 2019” (12.28.19)

29 Dec

I took a look back at some of my favorite themes from 2019 and some of my favorite songs from them. (BTW: The first song refers to one of my favorite jokes from this year: Because of climate change and rising sea levels, what city will become the new capital of the East Coast?) So what have we learned this year? I learned we’d better hope we’re being graded on a curve.

PLAYLIST FOR “ALL TALK ALL THE TIME” (11.23.19)

24 Nov

We’ve been hearing a lot of talk lately – opening statements, closing statements, testimony, rebuttals, colloquies, points of order (even when there didn’t seem to be any point nor any discernible order). So in the best and, I might add, the most predictable Turntable For One tradition, I tried to exploit and exacerbate the situation with lots of songs about talking, telling, saying, and opining. And everyone had a good time…at least that’s what I’m telling myself.

PLAYLIST FOR “KNOWN AND UNKNOWN” (9.28.19)

28 Sep

This week’s show was ripped from the headlines with only superficial wounds as a result. Day after day we find out there are things we do know and things we don’t know. Since I’ve demonstrated time after time that I have no shame about exploiting current situations, I dedicated the show to the known and the unknown. I know I got away with it, while it’s unknown to me how I did it.

PLAYLIST FOR: “OPEN BORDERS” (4.6.19)

7 Apr

I opened the southern border wide to celebrate just a small fraction of the songs, musicians, singers from the other side of the border who have given us so much great music. Plus I played the only Frank Sinatra song I can think of where he deliberately sings off key. And to help drive home the point of this week’s show, I also played a song from the new Broadway musical Hadestown, in which Hades, more of a demagogue than demigod, sings about building his wall around Hadestown. Sound chillingly familiar?

PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO BITTERNESS” (3.23.19)

23 Mar

Generally it takes 12 muscles to smile and 11 muscles to frown. But the 25 songs I played don’t even begin to capture the complexity, the intensity, the subtleties,  and the diversity of bitterness. PLAYLIST FOR “MARIE KONDO WEEK!” (2,23.19)

24 Feb

This week’s show was a tribute to the diva of decluttering, the dean of de-accession, the titan of tidying up – Marie Kondo. I played nothing but music that “sparks joy” for me and tossed in a few joyful requests from the audience. Plus, following Marie Kondo’s advice, I gathered all my musical themes, thanked several of them for their service, and summarily threw them away.
