PLAYLIST FOR “NEW HOLIDAY MUSIC 2021” (12.11.21)

12 Dec

It’s that time of year again. The season of Peace On Earth and Good Will toward Men. How’s that going so far? Not great, I know. Why not? I think this is clearly another example of a supply chain problem. Still, there are some who have tried to spread holiday spirit undaunted by pandemics and politics and vaccination vexations. I mean  the singers, songwriters, and musicians who created a ton of new holiday CDs and music. They were the stars this week.

PLAYLIST FOR “ELLA FITZGERALD CHALLENGES THE WORLD” – AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (5.1.21)

2 May

This week I played a show from another world ago. No, I don’t mean we listened to an episode of Gunsmoke. I reached into the archives and dusted off a show from 2016. This is what I wrote about it back then:

This week Ella Fitzgerald took on all comers in a head-to-head, well, really a voice-to-voice competition. She sang standards and some surprising duets; she even challenged Sarah Vaughan in a “forgetting the lyrics” competition (Sarah won) and challenged Shirley Horn to a “slow singing” competition (Shirley won). But it was impossible to listen to this show without marveling at Ella’s musicality and her warmth and without feeling fortunate that we had her for so long.

PLAYLIST FOR “COPYCATS” (10.11.14)

13 Oct

I hope my hint this week was sufficiently confusing…“I’ll play every song at least twice but I won’t play any song more than once.” All I meant was I’ll play two different songs with the same song title. I was surprised at how many there are, and how many I didn’t know before last week. How about you?
