PLAYLIST FOR “CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL DANCE DAY AND MORE!” (4.30.22)

1 May

Saturday afternoon, I guest-hosted American Jukebox, rock hits of the 50s, 60s, and 70s and played music to celebrate International Dance Day and pop stars who have also sung from the Great American Songbook. So for Saturday night’s show, just to be different, I chose the themes of International Dance Day and pop stars singing from the Great American Songbook and I also tossed in a few jazz singers singing classic pop tunes.

He gave us so much wonderful, unforgettable music. Wait, you’re thinking of that Frank? I was thinking of Frank Loesser and I tried to squeeze as many gems in his voluminous songbook from movies, Broadway, and popular song into a couple hours as I could. PLAYLIST FOR “MORE THAN 3 TENORS” (3.19.22)

21 Mar

They were superstars on their own, iconic names who didn’t need first names: Carreras, Domingo, Pavarotti. The world loved them; and they loved the world – sometimes a little too literary. When they agreed to sing together, they went from superstars to superheroes: The Three Tenors. Three? Really? That’s all it takes to be adored? I can do better – much better than that! Let the adoration flow because I presented More Than Three Tenors” this week. Of course, I meant, tenor sax players and accompanists plus a few favorite tenor voices as well.

PLAYLIST FOR “DISINFORMATION WEEK” (3.5.22)

6 Mar

Disinformation. It’s a word we’re hearing frequently these days. Some people call Disinformation propaganda; some people with a straight face call it alternative facts. I call it pernicious lies. So I spent two hours defining and explicating Disinformation; and, most importantly, telling people how to protect themselves from it. JUST KIDDING! You know me. Instead, I spent the two hours exploiting this sensitive issue and squeezing every last drop of irony and rueful laughter from it. But before things got too silly, I started the show with a much-too appropriately titled Ukrainian folk song, recognizing the only thing breaking apart faster than my heart is the world

PLAYLIST FOR “DOUBLE THREATS, TRIPLE THREATS, & MORE” (2.26.22)

27 Feb

Double threats. Maybe even triple threats. And no, I’m not talking about my fan mail. I’m talking about people – well, take Hugh Jackman, for example. He acts, he also sings, he can dance, and he can tear your throat out with his Wolverine claws. This week was dedicated to those people blessed with more than one enviable talent. Some of the singers this week write songs or came from other professions. Plus some of the songs come from unexpected sources – Dorothy Parker, Kazuo Ishiguro, even Fred Astaire. Gotta say I am in awe of these multi-talented people, especially since I had to give up chewing gum a few years back.

PLAYLIST FOR “LIGHTBULB MOMENTS” (11.13.21)

15 Nov

They don’t happen often and they don’t happen to everyone. But if one does happen to you, it could change your life. Of course I’m talking about an IRS audit. Of course I’m not talking about an IRS audit. I’m talking about those out-of-the-blue, eye opening moments of inspiration or maybe self-discovery. One thing: they’re always moments of clarity. I don’t know what you call them: Serendipity? Intuition? Divine Intervention? Years and years of therapy? I called them something else this week. I called them Lightbulb Moments because that’s how I could get two-hours of music out of them – tossing in a few personal lightbulb moments that changed my own musical life.

PLAYLIST FOR “HALLOWEEN PARTY 2021”

1 Nov

It’s that time again, time when ghastly, ghostly white apparitions appear. The living dead, their eyes open but unseeing, their mouths moving but they say nothing. I know, I just described the U.S. Senate, but that’s not what the show was about this week. I served up a bobbing bucket full of great ghoulish songs at the annual Turntable for One Halloween party! And, best of all, I got to play my favorite game. When Trick Or Treaters came to the door, I got to guess who they were dressed up to be and give them an appropriate song. Can two things be different and the same? I mean, they’re different but really they’re the same. What about Drake Devil Dogs & Hostess Susie-Qs? Or Ring Dings and Ding Dongs? Or Yodels and Ho-Hos? Probably shouldn’t be writing this when I’m so hungry. And does this applies to music? Can two songs, two different songs really be the same song, like twins? Look over this week’s playlist and decide for yourself.

PLAYLIST FOR “STOP, LOOK, AND LISTEN” (4.17.21)

18 Apr

In addition to playing songs about Stop, Look, & Listen, I spent much of the hour asking anyone who would listen to stop and look into their wallets – I mean into their hearts and make a donation to the WMNR Spring Fundraising Drive. It wasn’t all pleading and begging. After I played Billie Holiday’s blown Take 7 of Glad To Be Unhappy, I  gave the audience the opportunity to make a couple of donations if they wanted to hear the completed version. PLAYLIST FOR “SPRING FEVER” (4.3.21)

2 Apr

I’m tired of cabin fever and Covid fever and hay fever. Time to focus on what’s really bugging me these days: Spring Fever. Lots of songs about Spring plus a report from Spring Break from The Hot Sardines, a song to put a little Spring in your step from Lucy Dixon, and a demonstration of Spring cleaning from Kevin Mahogany, and presented the Turntable For One Spring Chickens Award to Freda Payne & Johnny Mathis. A highly contagious couple of hours.
