PLAYLIST FOR “TURNTABLE FOR ONE ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY” -AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (12.18.21)

19 Dec

I started my Christmas vacation a little early and played the 2020 Christmas program, recorded back when we were all concerned about the pandemic and worried if large gatherings were the smartest way to celebrate the holiday. Hmmm – it seems the more things change…  Here’s the description I wrote about the show last year:

Some traditional holiday favorites, both from the show and around my house; plus a demo of a Christmas song with music composed by my son, Cody, and lyrics written by my wife, Megan. And if that weren’t enough to keep you awake and because no one begged me not to do it, once again I played the worst Christmas song ever written as sung by Robert Goulet. And what Turntable For One Christmas Party would be complete without the annual and traditional heartwarming retelling of the story of how a beloved Christmas song nearly got me expelled from Hebrew school? Merry and Happy and the best and safest holidays possible for all.  I’ll be back in the new year.

PLAYLIST FOR “SINGING THEIR PRAISES” (10.9.21)

10 Oct

Don’t you love it when Nat Cole sings one of his signature songs, for instance, Smile? Someone else sang that this week. What about any recordings of Sinatra singing Angel Eyes? Someone else sang that too, because this week great singers and musicians paid tribute to other great singers and musicians in a two-hour love fest of “Singing Their Praises.” I also tossed in a few of the originals lest we forget how original their music was.

PLAYLIST FOR “WILLPOWER VS WON’T-POWER” (6.5.21)

6 Jun

What does it take to lose weight? Willpower. Stop biting your nails? Willpower. What does it take to stop watching America’s Got Talent? Half a brain – but that’s a different issue. Getting back on topic: what does it take to give up smoking? Again, Willpower. So let me get this straight: Willpower is forcing yourself not to do something. Wouldn’t it make more sense to call it Won’t-power?  But no – everyone gives Willpower all the praise and approbation. Well, not  this week! I think Won’t is just as important to songwriters as Will – maybe more important. I tried to prove that with songs about Will and Won’t. I won’t tell you which side won; but I will tell you the music definitely won.

PLAYLIST FOR “ELLA FITZGERALD CHALLENGES THE WORLD” – AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (5.1.21)

2 May

This week I played a show from another world ago. No, I don’t mean we listened to an episode of Gunsmoke. I reached into the archives and dusted off a show from 2016. This is what I wrote about it back then:

This week Ella Fitzgerald took on all comers in a head-to-head, well, really a voice-to-voice competition. She sang standards and some surprising duets; she even challenged Sarah Vaughan in a “forgetting the lyrics” competition (Sarah won) and challenged Shirley Horn to a “slow singing” competition (Shirley won). But it was impossible to listen to this show without marveling at Ella’s musicality and her warmth and without feeling fortunate that we had her for so long.

PLAYLIST FOR “LET’S TALK ABOUT ME” – AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST – (8.8.20)

9 Aug

(I took the week off and found a show from 2018. It was like finding my lost youth and innocence…and some great music. Here are my comments from that other world ago.)

Last night’s show was all about me – no, it’s not what you’re thinking. Check out the song titles and you’ll see that the show was all about “me,” not me. Although since I chose all the songs and all the singers myself, wasn’t the show really all about me? If anyone isn’t utterly confused yet, write to me. I’m sure I can fix that.

PLAYLIST FOR “SELF-DECEPTION” (5.16.20)

17 May

The question people ask me the most is “What’s the best thing about being on the radio?” (It’s also the one question people ask me I could read on the air without upsetting the FCC.) I always tell people the best thing is talking to thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of people. Of course, the truth is (especially these days) I’m home, in my office, talking into a microphone, and the only thing listening to me is my computer (and, like my audience, it occasionally drops off to sleep). Okay, so maybe I should tell people the really best thing about being on the radio is having an opportunity week after week to indulge my insatiable capacity for self-deception. Fine. I said it. Happy now? But I’m not alone. All of these songs are about people deceiving and fooling themselves about something – with some variations of self-awareness tossed in there.
