A FEW WORDS ABOUT THIS WEEK’S SPECIAL SHOW (5.30.15) #jazz #jazzradio #jazzvocalists #requestradio

27 May

You know how I struggle every week to come up with an interesting theme and then painstakingly pick perfect songs to fit that theme? Stop laughing! It could happen – but not this week. This week I’m opening up the phone lines and taking requests live on the air. Got a song or a performer you want to hear? Call me Saturday night and if I can find it and if I have time, I’ll play it right then and there. Or email your requests and dedications to me at turntable@wmnr.org I hope you’ll be listening Saturday night – because why should the NSA be the only ones listening to me?

HINT FOR THIS SATURDAY NIGHT’S THEME (5.23.15) #jazz #jazzvocals #jazzradio #prx

20 May

HINT:

During past seasons I’ve presented musical tributes to the Prepositional Phrase, the Conditional Tense, and the Subordinate Clause, all in my effort to leave no audience behind. You might ask, Did these programs raise the literacy bar or did they just send more people to The Literacy Bar, which is probably a bar somewhere in San Diego? You might also ask, Isn’t it, in fact, impossible to have a “race to the top” when you’re trying to “level the playing field?” (B.T.W., if you’re so full of questions and queries, maybe you should think about getting your own blog and stop interrupting mine.) Am I ready to give up, to admit final defeat to all the forces dealing daily death blows to correct grammar? Uh, maybe not!

HINT FOR THIS SATURDAY NIGHT’S THEME (5.2.15) #jazz #jazzradio #jazzvocals

29 Apr

HINT:

Beginning Friday and for the next 7 days, my radio station, WMNR, will be celebrating its first-ever “Theme Week.” The theme this week will be “New Beginnings” and many of the broadcasters — classical, folk, and jazz — will be playing music that fits the theme. Will I bend and yield to such conformity? All I can say is, “Baaaa,”

PLAYLIST FOR “CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY” ( 4.25.15) #jazz #jazzvocals #jazzradio

28 Apr

This week we got a little ahead of the calendar and celebrated International Jazz Day, which is actually April 30th. So I outsourced all of the singers to those many, many countries around the world that love and respect jazz more than America does, even though it’s the country where jazz was invented. Sigh…
