PLAYLIST FOR “HEY – THAT SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN!” (5.20.23)

24 May

What do these 3 things have in common: building a house at the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean,  launching a nuclear attack – you pick the target, transporting Prince Harry and Meghan from a New York City event to their hotel three blocks away. No, they’re not on my bucket list. Correct answer: They all take Planning! And you know what else takes planning – this show!  Stop laughing. To prove how completely, thoroughly this show is planned, I chose for a musical theme: Hey – That sounds like a plan. (Not everything went as planned…)

PLAYLIST FOR “LYRICS CAME LATER” (11.20.21)

21 Nov

In the beginning was the Word. Okay, fine. But not this week. Not on this show. Almost everything I played started out as an instrumental and the lyrics came later. To bring things back to reality, I ended with a melody played so beautifully that I don’t think it really needed the lyrics added later and, finally, with a lyric that Johnny Mercer wrote but didn’t live long enough to set to music.

PLAYLIST FOR “HALLOWEEN PARTY 2021”

1 Nov

It’s that time again, time when ghastly, ghostly white apparitions appear. The living dead, their eyes open but unseeing, their mouths moving but they say nothing. I know, I just described the U.S. Senate, but that’s not what the show was about this week. I served up a bobbing bucket full of great ghoulish songs at the annual Turntable for One Halloween party! And, best of all, I got to play my favorite game. When Trick Or Treaters came to the door, I got to guess who they were dressed up to be and give them an appropriate song. (Professional tip: This also saves a ton of money on candy.)

PLAYLIST FOR “CONTRAFACTUM – AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST” (12.26.20)

27 Dec

Out with the old? That’s what I did. I played an archive show from last June as the final program for this wretched year. Let’s hope for better – and I mean the new year, certainly not my shows. Here’s what I wrote in June:

Contrafactum – it’s not just a word on Jeopardy.  Contrafactum are two different songs with the same melody but different lyrics. To jazz musicians, they are two tunes with the same chordal structure. (I tossed a few of those in for good measure – excuse the pun.) Who said educational radio is dead? Probably somebody who has listened to my show.

SONG TITLE  /  Artist  /  CD Or Album Title

  • OH! LOOK AT ME NOW  /  Mark Jennett  /  “Everybody Says Don’t”
  • OH! LOOK AT ME NOW  /  Monica Ramey & The Beegie Adair Trio  /  “Monica Ramey & The Beegie Adair Trio”
  • BODY AND SOUL  /  Tony Bennett & Amy Winehouse  /  “Duets II”
  • BODY AND SOUL  /  Mark Murphy  /  “Songbook”
  • I GOT RHYTHM  /  Sarah Vaughan  /  “Ultra Lounge”
  • MEET THE FLINTSTONES  /  Postmodern Jukebox  /  “Meet the Flintstones”
  • LI’L DARLIN’  /  Count Basie  /  “The Complete Atomic Basie”
  • LI’L DARLIN’  /  Monica Borrfors  /  “Li’l Darlin’”
  • DON’T DREAM OF ANYBODY BUT ME  /  (Mystery Vocalist)   /  Jackie DeShannon  /  “For You”
  • SHINY STOCKINGS  /  Lambert, Hendricks, & Bavan  /  “At Basin Street East”
  • SHINY STOCKINGS  /  Ella Fitzgerald & Count Basie  /  “Ella & Basie”
  • I GUESS I’LL HAVE TO CHANGE MY PLAN  /  Mel Torme & Jonathan Schwartz  /  “Mel Torme & Friends”

SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN

What’s the difference between a Dream and a Plan? Well, I’ve been having a lot of bad dreams lately, a lot of bad plans, too. Dreams aren’t real and they don’t come true…of course, most of my plans don’t come true, either. You know, maybe there’s no difference at all. Both of them end in disappointment and heartache – but not when singers like the ones I played are singing about plans they’re making!
