Every week I try to play some of the best marriages of words and music, singer and arranger, what’s written on the sheet music and what’s created in a singer’s mind. This week I also focussed on singers and musicians who are married in a more literal way. Whether they sing together, sing and play, sing and arrange, just about everyone I played is also husband and wife. And by including Mickey Rooney and his 8th wife, I was also able to reinforce the precept that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

Most shows and hosts try give good advice, especially at this time of year. The best shows and hosts even try to model the behavior and rules they suggest. I do things differently and I think it’s a better system, one that’s much easier on me and, probably, just as effective (if not more) for you. Here are the songs that best illustrate things I won’t be doing in the new year, but you should.

Well, there’s another snow storm coming, which, this time, they’ve named Winter Storm Hercules. Don’t they get it that if they named these storms something like Herb or Bev, the storms would develop a poor self-image, suffer from low self-esteem, and would never achieve their full potential? Okay, maybe that didn’t work out so well for me, but it could produce a weakened snow storm which would mean I could actually get to the radio station.
Whether the show is live or pre-recorded, it will be a new show with a new musical theme especially selected for the start of the new year.
