PLAYLIST FOR “THE MORE THE MERRIER” (2.18.23)

Usually I play 20-24 different singers, musicians, Mystery Vocalists each week. This week I challenged myself to play more. My goal was 57 different artists. Originally, my plan was play something by The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, say Good Night, and go home. But because the choir threatened to sue me if I even mentioned their name on my show – probably for elder abuse – I had to come up with a different solution.

PLAYLIST FOR “FUN WITH PHOBIAS” (6.4.22)

We all have them. Maybe we call them quirks or superstitions. Let’s call them by their real names – fears and phobias. Fear of Heights – it’s called Acrophobia. Dentrophobia – fear of Dentists. Even I have a phobia: The Fear of Howie Mandel suddenly showing up at my door. I’m sure there’s a name of that but I haven’t found it yet. Most of our phobias are manageable and many are actually curable. Here’s my question: are they exploitable, by which I mean could I get two hours of music out of them? Songs about phobias, songs to help overcome phobias – two hours of immersion therapy in swing.

PLAYLIST FOR “DISINFORMATION WEEK” (3.5.22)

Disinformation. It’s a word we’re hearing frequently these days. Some people call Disinformation propaganda; some people with a straight face call it alternative facts. I call it pernicious lies. So I spent two hours defining and explicating Disinformation; and, most importantly, telling people how to protect themselves from it. JUST KIDDING! You know me. Instead, I spent the two hours exploiting this sensitive issue and squeezing every last drop of irony and rueful laughter from it. I am certain of one thing: this weekend it snowed. It snowed a ton. And I didn’t make it to the station. So instead we listened to a show from last Fall. It certainly filled the two hours. And what else? Well, about that I am uncertain. Here’s what I wrote about the show back then:

PLAYLIST FOR “VIOLENCE WEEK” – A SHOW FROM THE ARCHIVES (2.27.21)

I spent the week wandering through the Turntable For One archives and found this show from Nov. 2019. It certainly made me nostalgic for doing a live show. Sigh… This is how I introduced the playlist back then:

If you ask me – and I’m going to pretend that you have – nothing stirs the heart and lifts our spirits like the men and women who, through practice and persistence, have mastered the art of violence — hey, wait a minute. That’s not what I’m typing! How do I turn off auto-fill? I mean VIOLINS! All of the music this week features a violin or a string section, or a jazz or classical violinist, plus a couple singers who also play violin. All in all, it was a very satisfying auditory discussion of string theory.
