PLAYLIST FOR “ACCORDION WEEK” (10.24.15) #jazz #jazzradio #jazzsingers #accordions

24 Oct

The accordion and Turntable For One. Some called that a perfect marriage, some called it synergy at its most organic, some just called it a night. There have been many swinging jazz accordionists in the past; and in the present, the instrument is finding its way into the background and the foreground with some great singers and musicians. Below is a partial list and all I had time to play this week.

PLAYLIST FOR “TEACHING OLD DOGS NEW TRICKS?” (9.27.14)

28 Sep

I know that you depend on Turntable For One to come up with easy answers to hard questions, the questions no one is asking (probably for lack of interest). And I don’t think the show has ever failed you, at least, not on that score. So last night, I challenged the old saw, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” Of course, the easy way to prove or disprove this would have been to bring an old dog into the studio and spend my hour of air time trying to teach it a new trick. However I scoff at the easy way, I eschew the conventional, and, so, instead, I played an hour of songs or singers related to the topic. The results may not have been conclusive, but they sure were swinging.

15 Jan

This was supposed to be my Halloween show, until a ton of snow fell in October, and I didn’t want such good music to be left behind. It surprised me how few jazz or jazz-influenced singers are left-handed. Next time I’m going for a show of left-handed ventriloquists.
