PLAYLIST FOR “IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU” (4.18.20)

19 Apr

Week after week after week, for the last ten years, this show has been about three things: me, myself, and I. Sure, I’ve talked now and then about the audience and me being a team – but I’ve recently been reminded that there’s no “I” in team. And you can’t spell Turntable without “U”. So this week all of the music was dedicated and focussed on YOU. I figure after sucking up to the audience for two hours in ten years, things can get back to normal next week.

PLAYLIST FOR “THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS” (2.1.20)

3 Feb

I’ve tried for months to do this theme, but something horrible would happen – in a mall, or a night club, or, dear God, another school. So, of course, out of decency I deferred. Besides, after a tragedy, that time is always reserved for politicians to offer their “thoughts and prayers” in lieu of doing anything. I thought I was safe this week, maybe because it was the night before the Super Bowl, or the night before Groundhog Day, or maybe because America really needs a hug this week, I offered some songs about thoughts and prayers.

PLAYLIST FOR “NOSTALGIA NIGHT” – AN ARCHIVE PRESENTATION (3.10.18)

11 Mar

I replayed a show from last November because I couldn’t do a live show this week and, considering all the horrendous things that haves happened just since November, I’ve taken to longing for the good old days — of not so long ago. It was nostalgic for when I was smart and my phone was dumb, when a blue state was just me having a bad day, and when Harvey was a six-foot invisible rabbit you really wanted to see and not a creep you never want to see again. We can’t live in the past, but I don’t mind an occasional visit. I’ll be back from my trip down memory lane and in the studio next Saturday night.

PLAYLIST FOR “NAME-DROPPING” (11.4.17)

5 Nov

I spent the evening naming names – not in a Robert Mueller way, but by playing songs that have at least one reference to a real person.  Some name-drop many more than one person and others have spontaneous ad-lib shout-outs. The final song doesn’t really name-drop any person, but it was my way to say we’re thinking about you, NYC after the events of last week.
