PLAYLIST FOR “IN THE COMPANY OF ACCOMPANISTS” (5.22.21)

23 May

Usually I shine the spotlight on the singer behind the mic, but this week I also wanted to pay tribute to some of the other people on the bandstand, the indispensable musicians who are just as adept and flexible and generous in supporting a singer as they are in taking a solo.

PLAYLIST FOR “SUCKERS AND LOSERS” (9.12.20)

13 Sep

I don’t know why I thought of this theme. Must be something in the air. So I played some of my favorite sucker/loser songs; and after half an hour, I told the audience that I’d been suckering them into thinking I was just doing another one of those ironic themes. I dedicated the rest of the show to musicians, singers, composers, and lyricist  who are/were definitely non-suckers and non-losers. Not only have they served to create, expand, and embolden the world of jazz, but also they served this country in its military forces. (I also took a moment or two to grieve the passing of Gary Peacock.)

Is it really possible to do two things at once and give each your full attention? What? What was I saying? Am I typing or talking to myself?

Fortunately, all of the singers and musicians on this week’s show are adept, if not masterful, at multi-tasking and making it all swing.
