PLAYLIST FOR “A PRE-CHRISTMAS PARTY PARTY” 12.13.25

15 Dec

Next week is my annual Turntable For One Christmas party. And, of course, everyone is invited…well maybe not the person who put hardboiled eggs in the eggnog (as if anything could make eggnog more palatable) and the person who made a wish and blew out all the candles on my menorah. (That’s not how it works!) But I realized that I can’t possibly squeeze all of my favorite holiday music into two hours next week. So I got a head start this week.

It’s a Turntable for One tradition that on the next to the last show for the season I hand out Summer listening assignments just as it’s a Turntable For One tradition that the audience ignores me. Not exactly symbiotic, is it?

Schadenfreude taking pleasure in the failures of someone else. In other words, listeners’ usual response to my show. Well, this week, right back at you with about a dozen songs that drip of one of our most secret and guilty pleasures. The singers this week aren’t bad, either. Take a look.

This week I played a number of hit jazz tunes which were so popular that lyrics were added later — sometimes years later — so that singers could add them to their sets. “Holiday For Strings” is an outlier and an anomaly, but if you know Mandy’s version, you know why I couldn’t resist playing it.
