PLAYLIST FOR “EASY DOES IT” (3.4.23)

5 Mar

You know how I work very hard planning this show every week? Some of my audience was  thinking,”Work harder.”  And some were thinking, “This show is planned?”  And the rest of them were likely thinking, “Will you get through the opening so we can listen to some music?”  The point was this week instead of working hard, I took it easy. In fact, everything about the show, especially the songs were easy. (Not entirely sure the audience got off easy.)

PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO DIRECT ADDRESS” – AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST (BETTER KNOWN AS A RERUN) (1.21.23)

22 Jan

I didn’t make it to the station this week, so I played a show from when I was younger and the world was easier to understand. Okay, just when I was younger. Here’s what I said about it the first time around:

“‘What we got here is failure to communicate,’ said one of the most reprehensible yet prescient movie villains of all time. That line of dialogue has been playing frequently in my head these days. How can we communicate better? Of course, my answer to this and so many other questions is simple: better grammar. So in my continuing effort to leave no listener behind, I made a case for the vocative case, another term for the function of grammar known as direct address. All of the songs served as examples, using a name, a term of endearment, or a feeling to grab the attention of the intended object of communication. If only the rest of the world would function according to the orderly, predictable precepts in my dog-eared high school grammar book.”

PLAYLIST FOR “AN EXERCISE IN EXERCISING” (AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (11.5.22)

6 Nov

Couldn’t do a live show this week, so I decided to take a stroll down memory lane, a shorter and shorter trip for me. Look what I found! A show from last Spring. Here’s what I wrote about the show at the time…

Until recently my exercise regimen consisted of Running my mouth, Stretching the truth; Rushing to judgment; and Leaping to all the wrong conclusions. Those days are gone. Now I have a Life Coach telling me when to sleep, when to wake up, when to stand, and how far to walk and on and on. And there’s no way I can tell this Life Coach to put a cork in it because my Life Coach isn’t a person – it’s an Apple Watch that’s become the boss of me. So if I have to endure this torture, of course, my audience had to endure the torture with two-hours of songs about exercise. I’d write more but my damned watch is telling me it’s time to stand!

SONG TITLE  /  Artist  /  CD Or Album Title

  • LET’S TAKE A WALK AROUND THE BLOCK  /  Mel Torme  /  “Live At Marty’s”

  • I’M GONNA SIT RIGHT DOWN AND WRITE MYSELF A LETTER  /  Frank Sinatra & Count Basie  /  “Sinatra/Basie: The Complete Reprise Studio Recordings”
  • WALKIN’  /  The Real Group  /  Unreal”
  • SHALL WE DANCE  /  Lucy Dixon  /  “Lulu’s Back In Town”
  • KISS AND RUN  /  Johnny Hartman  /  “I Just Dropped By To Say Hello”
  • IT SWUNG WIDE OPEN  /  Joey DeFrancesco  /  “In The Key Of The Universe”

PLAYLIST FOR “FUN WITH PHOBIAS” (6.4.22)

6 Jun

We all have them. Maybe we call them quirks or superstitions. Let’s call them by their real names – fears and phobias. Fear of Heights – it’s called Acrophobia.  Dentrophobia – fear of Dentists. Even I have a phobia: The Fear of Howie Mandel suddenly showing up at my door. I’m sure there’s a name of that but I haven’t found it yet. Most of our phobias are manageable and many are actually curable. Here’s my question: are they exploitable, by which I mean could I get two hours of music out of them? Songs about phobias, songs to help overcome phobias – two hours of immersion therapy in swing.

1 May

Saturday afternoon, I guest-hosted American Jukebox, rock hits of the 50s, 60s, and 70s and played music to celebrate International Dance Day and pop stars who have also sung from the Great American Songbook. PLAYLIST FOR “MORE THAN 3 TENORS” (3.19.22)

21 Mar

They were superstars on their own, iconic names who didn’t need first names: Carreras, Domingo, Pavarotti. The world loved them; and they loved the world – sometimes a little too literary. When they agreed to sing together, they went from superstars to superheroes: The Three Tenors. Three? Really? That’s all it takes to be adored? I can do better – much better than that! Let the adoration flow because I presented More Than Three Tenors” this week. Of course, I meant, tenor sax players and accompanists plus a few favorite tenor voices as well.

PLAYLIST FOR “IT’S THAT TIME!” (11.6.21)

8 Nov

Something unusual and special happened this weekend. No, my show wasn’t organized and coherent. I said, unusual and special, I didn’t say anything about a miracle. If you’ve been examining or reexamining your life, you’ve probably thought. “Wouldn’t it be great if I could turn back the clock?” Well, this was  your night! The end of Daylight Saving Time.  Time to Fall behind and turn the clocks back an hour. So as what I’m calling a public service, I offered some reminders about turning back the clocks and a few suggestions for what to do with that extra hour. So what I’m calling a good time was had by all.

I’m almost back – but I’m not quite ready to bring my vacation to an untimely end, so I’m playing a couple weeks of shows from the archive. I’ll be back live on Sept. 4th! Here’s what I said about last night’s show when it was live  a year and a half ago:

Do you like stores with happy endings? Well, this show wasn’t going to make you very happy. Unless, of course, you like wonderful singers and musicians interpreting sad songs (at all kinds of tempos). Happy now?
