It’s also almost Toots Thielemans’ 92nd birthday. He decided recently to retire, so I especially wanted to celebrate his birthday, his long career, and his music which always came straight from his heart into his harmonica. Thanks, Toots!

HINT: What do you call that feeling you get when the team that beat your team in the first round gets knocked out of the tournament in the second round, or that feeling you get when the hedge fund guy who lost all your investments goes to jail for fraud (pretend that could really happen)? It’s the same feeling a radio host feels when he gives you a vague and ambiguous hint about his musical theme and then enjoys watching you struggle and lose sleep trying to figure it out. Whatever you want to call it, I’ve got an hour of songs about it planned for this week.

Once again Turntable For One goes where no other radio program has tried to go. (What do they know that I don’t and when will I ever learn?) I challenged the record for the most number of songs played during the show and, including references from the accompanists, I played 30 in one hour, a record I think will stand for a while – certainly a lot longer than the Duke basketball team. A while back I broke the Turntable For One record for the greatest number of singers played on the air during one show. (And I did it without playing the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.) Well, since nobody wrote or called saying, “Don’t ever do anything like that again,” guess what? I’m doing something like that again.
