HINT FOR THIS SATURDAY NIGHT’S THEME (11.15.14)

12 Nov

HINT:

“We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” By that standard, my advice for this week’s show is BE AFRAID…BE VERY AFRAID!

On November 29, I’ll be presenting the Fifth Annual Turntable for One “Music To Be Thankful For” program. Do you have a piece of music you’ve been thankful for this past year? Email me (at turntable@wmnr.org) and let me know. I’ll try to fit in as much of your music as I can.  Remember: it’s a jazz vocals show, so no Mahler; and try to keep the time under five minutes.

Want to hear a classic Turntable For One show? There are 32 podcasts waiting to satisfy your every jazz vocal need.

PLAYLIST FOR “THE SONG IS YOU” (11.8.14)

8 Nov

I’ve played songs that compare people to ghosts, dogs, cats, gypsies, tramps, and thieves, mysteries, and more. You know what I haven’t played? What’s that? Songs that compare people to pastrami sandwiches or garages or stucco or a slow death by viper venom? Ok, fine, you’re right. Now do you want to hear my answer? Songs that compare people to songs! If you can come up with an hour of songs comparing people to stucco, let me know, but until then, check these songs out.

If you thought about it – even for a minute – before you did it, you’d have known immediately, instinctively it wasn’t going to end well. Far from it. The cards were stacked against you. But did that stop you? No.

Can you think of any songs like that? I can.

15 Oct

HINT:

When we admire singers and musicians, we go to their concerts, we buy their music. When singers and musicians admire other singers and musicians, what do they do? (And, if you think this has something to do with Tonia Harding, you’re really on the wrong track.)
