Saturday afternoon, I guest-hosted American Jukebox, rock hits of the 50s, 60s, and 70s and played music to celebrate International Dance Day and pop stars who have also sung from the Great American Songbook. I wanted to do a special show for a special audience who never choose to listen to the show but listen to the show nearly every week, often sitting in someone’s lap or, more likely, sitting in exactly the chair someone else wants to sit in. So I dedicated the show to all the cats who are probably my furriest and  also my most loyal listeners with songs about cats and songs sung by Cats and Kats. During the show listeners in AZ sent me a photo of their cat, Baxter, listening to my show with them. PLAYLIST FOR “ANNIVERSARY” (1.8.22)

 2022 is just a week old, but it’s been an eventful week. We observed the one-year anniversary of one of the most disgraceful, unforgettable, unforgivable moments in American history. On a happier note – there are happier notes. WMNR Fine Arts Radio celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2022.  On a personal note, my wife and I celebrated our 52nd anniversary this week. Did we go to a fabulous restaurant?  No, not when omicron is on most menus as a main course. Did we go ice skating? (Something Megan has loved her entire life.) Let me just say that the only things more brittle than my ego are my bones. So we went dancing instead?  Did you hear what I just said about my bones?  Actually, no, that one’s more about my ego.  Which finally brings me to this week’s theme if anyone is still awake. I wanted to celebrate my anniversary and my wife with some of the music that brought us together, some of the music Megan and I discovered together, some of the music that has sustained us. In short: just when you thought this show couldn’t get more self-indulgent, I presented two hours of Music We Love on this Happy Anniversary edition of Turntable For One. (Starting with the music that played when Megan walked down the aisle at our wedding.)

You know what drives me crazy? People who over-use already tired rhetorical cliches, such as “With all due respect” – which is always a lie. My least favorite: “I got two words for you…” I thought (hoped) if I used that phrase over and over and over for two hours and if every song I played had a two-word title, maybe – just maybe – people would think twice (or maybe even once) and not use that annoying expression. Did it work? I got three words for myself: “In your dreams.”

Well, I’m finally back from being under the weather…I guess that means that now I’m over the weather. Last Saturday night, I let the audience play producer in the privacy of their own homes. I played two versions of the same song and listeners could decide for themselves which was the better singer, or interpretation, or arrangement. Luckily for me, no one got so good at the process that they asked to take over my time slot. Phew.
