I couldn’t make it into the station tonight, but, lucky you, the Archive gods picked the show “Wake-Up Calls” instead of my first choice,  “A Musical Tribute To Incisions That Don’t Heal.” Maybe next time.

HINT FOR THIS SATURDAY NIGHT’S THEME (1.18.14)

14 Jan

Saturday night’s show will be a program from the vast and qualitatively unfathomable Turntable For One archives. The results are known only to the accounting firm of Ernst and Young, but those number crunchers won’t return any of my calls.  So your guess is as good as mine.

By the way, a new podcast has been posted on PRX, the Public Radio Exchange. Better get there before the crowd turns ugly.

HINT:

Every great song is a marriage between words and music; every great recording is a marriage between artist and arranger. But what about performances which represent yet another kind of marriage? I’ve got an hour of those planned for Saturday!

PLAYLIST FOR “DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO” RULES TO LIVE BY IN 2014 (1.4.14)

4 Jan

Most shows and hosts try give good advice, especially at this time of year. The best shows and hosts even try to model the behavior and rules they suggest. I do things differently and I think it’s a better system, one that’s much easier on me and, probably, just as effective (if not more) for you. Here are the songs that best illustrate things I won’t be doing in the new year, but you should.

  • RELAX / Cormac Kenevey / “The Art Of Dreaming”

  • EV’RYBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO BE WRONG / Frank Sinatra / “My Kind Of Broadway”
  • COCKEYED OPTIMIST / (Mystery Vocalist) / Nancy Sinatra / “Shifting Gears”
  • SHALL WE DANCE / Christine Ebersol / “Strings Attached”
  • GOOGLEABLE / Ori Dagan / “More Than Three”
  • MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY / Sophie Milman / “Make Someone Happy”
  • LISTEN HERE / Dave Frishberg / “Classics”
  • PARIS MISMATCH / (Theme Music) / Cody Owen Stine / “(Unreleased Master)

HINT FOR THIS SATURDAY NIGHT’S THEME (1.4.14)

1 Jan

Happy New Year, all!

Well, there’s another snow storm coming, which, this time, they’ve named Winter Storm Hercules. Don’t they get it that if they named these storms something like Herb or Bev, the storms would develop a poor self-image, suffer from low self-esteem, and would never achieve their full potential? Okay, maybe that didn’t work out so well for me, but it could produce a weakened snow storm which would mean I could actually get to the radio station.

Whether the show is live or pre-recorded, it will be a new show with a new musical theme especially selected for the start of the new year.

HINT:

Know the secrets of surviving 2014? I do.
