PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO NEW YORK” (9.11.21)

12 Sep

First show of my 12th season. It was great to be back. But, as reluctant as I am to admit it, the day was certainly not about me. It was September 11th. So for New York, and for anyone and everyone with scars on their heart for what happened on that day twenty years ago, I played songs celebrating the indomitable spirit, the complexity, and the inspiration that is New York City.

PLAYLIST FOR “VIOLENCE WEEK” – A SHOW FROM THE ARCHIVES (2.27.21)

1 Mar

I spent the week wandering through the Turntable For One archives and found this show from Nov. 2019. It certainly made me nostalgic for doing a live show. Sigh… This is how I introduced the playlist back then:

If you ask me – and I’m going to pretend that you have – nothing stirs the heart and lifts our spirits like the men and women who, through practice and persistence, have mastered the art of violence — hey, wait a minute. That’s not what I’m typing! How do I turn off auto-fill? I mean VIOLINS! All of the music this week features a violin or a string section, or a jazz or classical violinist, plus a couple singers who also play violin. All in all, it was a very satisfying auditory discussion of string theory.

  • I CONCENTRATE ON YOU  /  Harry Connick Jr.  /  “True Love: A Celebration of Cole Porter”
  • YOU’VE CHANGED  /  Billie Holiday  /  “Lady In Satin”
  •  THAT FACE  /  Seth MacFarlane  /  “In Full Swing”
  • THEM THERE EYES  /  Yamit Lemoine  /  “AIn’t Misbehavin’”
  • GOOD MORNING HEARTACHE  /  Jamie Cullum & Laura Mvula  /  “Interlude”
  • I’VE GOT NO STRINGS  /  Roz Corral  /  “Telling Tales”
  • MAKE UP YOUR MIND  /  Andre Previn & Itzhak Perlman  /  “A Different Kind of Blues”
  • PEOPLE WILL SAY WE’RE IN LOVE  /  Ella Fitzgerald & Gregory Porter  /  “Someone To Watch over Me”
  • DON’T TAKE YOUR LOVE FROM ME  /  (Mystery Vocalist)  /  Rhonda Fleming  /  “The Very Best…”
