PLAYLIST FOR “FRENCH KISSES” (4.29.23)

Let’s be honest. France has seen some dark days. Some examples: Joan of Arc? Where was Gloria Allred when we needed her? And you can’t talk about dark days without Napoleon — the man not the dessert. Or Vichy – the government, not the water. And Freedom Fries – wait, no, that was our dumb mistake. And today the French are suffering through another tragic indignity – raising the national retirement age from 62 to 64. Well. I think we need to show our support and not just our incredulity for what the brave but – not over-worked -people of France going through. I presented a celebration of French singers and musicians, french songs, and songs about France. That’s right, for two hours I gave out out French Kisses this week on Turntable For One.

It’s time for the Oscars again. And, yes, you can fault the Oscars for being over-the-top – over the top egos, over the top vanity, over the top self-adulation. On the other hand, what do people who don’t win usually say? “It’s an honor just to be nominated.” And I can’t remember anyone at the Oscars insisting the voting was rigged or asking for a recount. I’m just saying… So in honor of the Academy Awards, I brought back a longtime Turntable for One tradition, listening to some wonderful Oscar nominated songs. Not the winners! Instead I presented a couple of hours of winning singers singing Oscar losing songs.

PLAYLIST FOR “VIOLENCE WEEK” – A SHOW FROM THE ARCHIVES (2.27.21)

I spent the week wandering through the Turntable For One archives and found this show from Nov. 2019. It certainly made me nostalgic for doing a live show. Sigh… This is how I introduced the playlist back then:

If you ask me – and I’m going to pretend that you have – nothing stirs the heart and lifts our spirits like the men and women who, through practice and persistence, have mastered the art of violence — hey, wait a minute. That’s not what I’m typing! How do I turn off auto-fill? I mean VIOLINS! All of the music this week features a violin or a string section, or a jazz or classical violinist, plus a couple singers who also play violin. All in all, it was a very satisfying auditory discussion of string theory.

I couldn’t do a live show this week; fortunately, the opposite isn’t doing a dead show, but presenting a show from the Turntable For One archives.
