Do you know how many holidays I missed during my show’s two-month summer hiatus? You probably don’t because you have real lives and don’t spend your week desperately trying to think of some kind of ironic new musical theme.  But this week I told the audience to forget their night caps and put on their party hats while I celebrated Holidays That I Missed. PLAYLIST FOR “VIOLENCE WEEK” – A SHOW FROM THE ARCHIVES (2.27.21)

1 Mar

I spent the week wandering through the Turntable For One archives and found this show from Nov. 2019. It certainly made me nostalgic for doing a live show. Sigh… This is how I introduced the playlist back then:

If you ask me – and I’m going to pretend that you have – nothing stirs the heart and lifts our spirits like the men and women who, through practice and persistence, have mastered the art of violence — hey, wait a minute. That’s not what I’m typing! How do I turn off auto-fill? I mean VIOLINS! All of the music this week features a violin or a string section, or a jazz or classical violinist, plus a couple singers who also play violin. All in all, it was a very satisfying auditory discussion of string theory.

PLAYLIST FOR “TOWN & COUNTRY” (2.6.21)

7 Feb

Remember the story we were taught when we were little? It was the story of the country mouse, cautious and practical, and the city mouse, worldly and sophisticated. I know my teachers were trying to teach us to be like the common sense country mouse. And I was never able to convince them that the two mice would be indistinguishable when caught in a sticky trap. And so the debate about which is better – living in the country or living in the city – has gone on and on and on. And it went on during my show, too. Did I throw light on this debate or just throw shade? Did I answer the questions or question the answers? Really? You gotta be kidding. I just tried to fill two hours with songs about the city and songs about the country. Plus a shout-out to the Super Bowl cities. (I let Gloria Estefan represent Florida because I can’t think of a single song about FL or any of its cities I want to hear.)
