It’s that time again. Time for ghost and goblins and ghouls; time for witches, curses, and the walking dead. And that means it’s time for my annual musical tribute to Congress. Whoops – wrong calendar! I mean it’s time for my annual Halloween Party. I play my favorite Halloween songs, and when trick or treaters come to the door, I get to guess who they’re dressed up to be, and then hand out an appropriate song. The final song of the show has absolutely nothing to do with Halloween, but I think it has absolutely everything to do with everything else.

One of my favorite shows of the year, not just because I get to play some favorite Halloween songs, but because when trick or treaters come to the door, I get to guess who they’re dressed up as. Of course, instead of handing out candy, I play a song that matches their costume. This year, somehow, a cat rang the doorbell, so I played a couple songs in honor of National Cat Day. By the way – and no surprise here – Holly Cole won the prize for the spookiest song. It may not be a Halloween song, but it’s fabulously scary, if you ask me.

They were superstars on their own, iconic names who didn’t need first names: Carreras, Domingo, Pavarotti. The world loved them; and they loved the world – sometimes a little too literary. When they agreed to sing together, they went from superstars to superheroes: The Three Tenors. Three? Really? That’s all it takes to be adored? I can do better – much better than that! It’s that time again, time when ghastly, ghostly white apparitions appear. The living dead, their eyes open but unseeing, their mouths moving but they say nothing. I know, I just described the U.S. Senate, but that’s not what the show was about this week. I served up a bobbing bucket full of great ghoulish songs at the annual Turntable for One Halloween party! And, best of all, I got to play my favorite game. When Trick Or Treaters came to the door, I got to guess who they were dressed up to be and give them an appropriate song. PLAYLIST FOR “POSITIVE VIBES” (11.14.20)

I tried a little experiment this week – an experiment in terror for me, that is. Could I send out nothing but positive vibes and eschew my inherent pessimism for an entire two hours? It seems to me the times demand this kind of sacrifice and I went for it with a collection of positive songs, positive singers, positive people (a mini-tribute to Fred Rogers), and a few of my favorite oh-so-positive vibes players – messers Gibbs, Wolfe, and Jackson. And for an extra treat – maybe for me only – I did the show live and in person at the station, something that’s not going to happen again until the infection rates really start to dive.
