PLAYLIST FOR “MORE THAN 3 TENORS” (3.19.22)

They were superstars on their own, iconic names who didn’t need first names: Carreras, Domingo, Pavarotti. The world loved them; and they loved the world – sometimes a little too literary. When they agreed to sing together, they went from superstars to superheroes: The Three Tenors. Three? Really? That’s all it takes to be adored? I can do better – much better than that! Knowing that a lot of people need therapy these days, and especially after Saturday, I played a show from last July. I thought I could help. Okay, really, I thought I could take the night off. This was my intro back then…

PLAYLIST FOR “HOW SWEET IT IS” – AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST (10.24.20)

Seems to me the world needs some sweetness even more than when I first did this show last June. Guaranteed “sweet” songs with no sugary aftertaste. Here’s how I introduced the show last summer. 

Sweet – it’s a word that you don’t hear much, especially now. Home Sweet Home? After three months of sheltering in place, what’s so sweet about being home? Sweet Dreams? Its been months since I had one. Sweet Spot? I know what it used to mean, but now it means keeping six feet away from people. Sweet Nothings? That’s still how most people describe the long, rambling opens to my shows (just like this). So I thought it was time to give Sweet a little love. It was only for two hours – then everyone could go back to life as we know it these days.

The two words, give and take, are frequently associated with my show, although usually in the form of “Give me a break!” and “I’m going to take a nap.” But this week all of the songs had either the words or the concepts of giving and taking. Saturday afternoon, I sat in for Garrett Stack on his program American Jukebox, rock and pop hits of the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s.  So I thought I’d spend Saturday evening on my show playing jazz versions of pop tunes. I gave the Gershwins, Rogers and Hart, Jerome Kern, Dorothy Fields, etc. the night off.  They didn’t complain, probably for reasons of death.
