PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO DIRECT ADDRESS” – AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST (BETTER KNOWN AS A RERUN) (1.21.23)

22 Jan

I didn’t make it to the station this week, so I played a show from when I was younger and the world was easier to understand. Okay, just when I was younger. Here’s what I said about it the first time around:

“‘What we got here is failure to communicate,’ said one of the most reprehensible yet prescient movie villains of all time. That line of dialogue has been playing frequently in my head these days. How can we communicate better? Of course, my answer to this and so many other questions is simple: better grammar. So in my continuing effort to leave no listener behind, I made a case for the vocative case, another term for the function of grammar known as direct address. All of the songs served as examples, using a name, a term of endearment, or a feeling to grab the attention of the intended object of communication. If only the rest of the world would function according to the orderly, predictable precepts in my dog-eared high school grammar book.”

Couldn’t do a live show this week. So I dipped into the archive from a few years ago. From the intro I wrote at the time, clearly the more things change, the more they stay the same…

Though there aren’t that many reasons to sing or dance these days, just to make certain we still remember what they look and sound like, I played a couple of hours of “dance” song and great singers. Now that’s my idea of dancing with the stars!

PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO UNREALITY – REALLY!” (5.14.22)

15 May

Impossible! It just can’t be! Have you lost touch with reality? I know. It sounds like my last IRS audit. Or maybe Wolf Blitzer’s performance review. Nope. These are things people have been saying about Turntable For One for years. And this week, they were right. I paid tribute to all the things and ways people embrace, admire, and seek Unreality. Is the last song Reality or Unreality? I think that’s going to depend very much on what we all do in the near future.

PLAYLIST FOR “LAUGHING AT LIFE”-AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (2.5.22)

6 Feb

A show from the archives, this time from back in 2017, which explains why you can hear the last vestiges of hope in my voice. Here’s how I introduced the show back then…

It’s true that smiling requires more muscles than frowning, which must be why smiling always tires me so quickly. Still, considering all that we know and fear about the world today, I thought it was worth spending a couple hours focusing on laughing and smiling. PLAYLIST FOR “SEASON FINALE 2021” (7.3.21)

4 Jul

It was the last show of the season. I’m off for two months replaced by live concerts from the Tanglewood Music Festival. But I’ll be keeping busy, once again firing up my ice cream truck and coming to a neighborhood near you. Here are some of the ice cream treats I’ll be featuring this year. Oh, and I also played a lot of songs about saying goodbye.

  • Wait till you try a Pandemic parfait. I know. I served this last year but I have a new variant this year. I think it’s a real killer.
  • This year I’ll be offering the Marjorie Taylor Green Sundae. Heavy on the whipped cream, heavier on the nuts
  • Of course I’ll have that old favorite, Cookie dough for the kid in you and play dough for the actual kids. They’ll eat it anyway.
  • How about my newest flavor – I just invented it in Jan. It’s Insurrection Ice Cream. It’s two parts Pabst Blue Ribbon and one part viagra. WARNING: If you have an Insurrection that lasts more than 4 hours, better call your lawyer.
  • One of my new favorites is Arizona chocolate chip. There are exactly 723 chocolate chips in a pint – we know because someone from Arizona has re-counted them three times.
  • Want something that’s locally sourced, non-GMO, organic, and recyclable? Try a napkin from the dispenser. My ice cream is a totally different story.
  • This year’s special offer: when you buy ten q-anon cones you get a free Jewish space laser.
  • Remember: My staff is fully vaccinated, they don’t wear masks, they don’t wear gloves, and they don’t wear hairnets – maybe I shouldn’t have told you that last one

PLAYLIST FOR “WILLPOWER VS WON’T-POWER” (6.5.21)

6 Jun

What does it take to lose weight? Willpower. Stop biting your nails? Willpower. What does it take to stop watching America’s Got Talent? Half a brain – but that’s a different issue. Getting back on topic: what does it take to give up smoking? Again, Willpower. So let me get this straight: Willpower is forcing yourself not to do something. Wouldn’t it make more sense to call it Won’t-power?  But no – everyone gives Willpower all the praise and approbation. Well, not  this week! I think Won’t is just as important to songwriters as Will – maybe more important. I tried to prove that with songs about Will and Won’t. I won’t tell you which side won; but I will tell you the music definitely won.

PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO DIRECT ADDRESS” (1.16.21)

17 Jan

“What we got here is failure to communicate,” said one of the most reprehensible yet prescient movie villains of all time. If only the rest of the world would function according to the orderly, predictable precepts in my dog-eared high school grammar book.
