I’m usually doing my annual Halloween show about now, playing classic Halloween songs and greeting trick or treaters at the door. This year I was doing all of the begging and pleading because Fine Arts Radio was practicing the fine art of fundraising! So with my penchant for throwing subtlety to the wind, I played an evening of duets and duos to urge listeners to put their money where my mouth is. (Making it clear to the more eager in my audience that I was only stating a metaphor.)

Sure, I promised my audience a special April 1st show with a new recording of Rod Stewart singing “Nessun Dorma,” a YouTube video of The Boy’s Choir of Galway Cathedral singing in Gaelic, “99 Bottles Of Beer On The Wall,” plus a bootleg from a Joni Mitchell recording session where Joni is aiming a profanity-lace rant at her assistant who gave her the wrong bottle of spring water. Okay, that stuff I couldn’t deliver. But a couple hours of songs about fools and foolishness was a foolproof formula for a great April Fools Day show.

Well, that didn’t take very long, 2021. You went from an exhilarating high on Tuesday to an abysmal low on Wednesday. In utter disbelief of  events we all were watching, I looked for a modicum of solace, peace, and even hope from a familiar source: comfort food – ice cream, mashed potatoes, peanut butter on matzoh.
