PLAYLIST FOR “BAD HABITS” (10.23.21)

24 Oct

We all have them. We may try to hide them with varying degrees of success or failure because – let’s face it – they totally reveal us, they embarrass us, and the worst ones can  actually define us for the rest of our lives. Of course I’m talking about our high school yearbook photos. Of course I’m not talking about our high school yearbook photos. I’m talking about Bad Habits. So it was nothing but Bad Habits this week – ranging from binge watching to smoking, drinking, co-dependence. magical thinking, and more. I’d go on but I’ve been told that rambling is a bad habit.

PLAYLIST FOR “HOW SWEET IT IS” – AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST (10.24.20)

25 Oct

Seems to me the world needs some sweetness even more than when I first did this show last June. Guaranteed “sweet” songs with no sugary aftertaste. Here’s how I introduced the show last summer.

Sweet – it’s a word that you don’t hear much, especially now. Home Sweet Home? After three months of sheltering in place, what’s so sweet about being home? Sweet Dreams? Its been months since I had one. Sweet Spot? I know what it used to mean, but now it means keeping six feet away from people. Sweet Nothings? That’s still how most people describe the long, rambling opens to my shows (just like this). So I thought it was time to give Sweet a little love. It was only for two hours – then everyone could go back to life as we know it these days.

PLAYLIST FOR “LET’S GO CLUBBING” (AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST) (10.17.20)

18 Oct

This is a re-broadcast of a show from last April, a simpler time when I couldn’t imagine that 8 months later things could be so much worse and heartache and loss could be so preponderant. This is how I introduced the playlist back then:

While everyone’s sheltering in place or self-quarantining, there are two ways to look at this week’s show featuring all live performances from jazz clubs and venues around the world: either I’m trying to make people feel bad because of all the night life we’re missing OR I’m trying to give people hope for what’s to come after this damned pandemic has run at least its first course. Which is it? You be the judge. I just had fun playing some of my favorite singers in front of a band, behind a microphone, in front of an audience.

PLAYLIST FOR “LOOK WHAT I FOUND IN THE MAILBOX!” (5.25.19)

27 May

Instead of a theme, instead of featuring the oft-heard Turntable For One regulars – Sinatra, Tony, Carmen, Ella, Nina, etc. – I put Saturday’s show together with only some of the new music I received in the mail (both physical and virtual) in just the past two weeks. I generously didn’t go into the other things I find in my mail – things like memorial headstone catalogs and threatening letters from Social Security since they found out that I am neither social nor secure. Also: here’s a shout out to all of the singers and musicians listed below – young and old – and to their promoters; without them my audience and I would just have to stare at each other for two hours, and I think we know who would lose that staring contest.

PLAYLIST FOR “JAZZ JUKEBOX” (11.17.18)

19 Nov

Saturday afternoon, I sat in for Garrett Stack on his program American Jukebox, rock and pop hits of the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s.  So I thought I’d spend Saturday evening on my show playing jazz versions of pop tunes. I gave the Gershwins, Rogers and Hart, Jerome Kern, Dorothy Fields, etc. the night off.  They didn’t complain, probably for reasons of death.
