It’s that time of year when millions of people have to confront their S.A.D., their Seasonal Affect Disorder. Mine is usually triggered by the realization that a new season of “Dancing With The Stars” is right around the corner. That’s one of so many things that can make me so, so sad. PLAYLIST FOR “BROADWAY VS JAZZ, THE VOCAL SMACK-DOWN” (1.26.13)

I know it wasn’t really a fair competition, not when jazz (-inflected) singers can change characters with every song they sing, and look for  colors of melody and nuance of lyric to emphasize or embellish; while Broadway singers have to stay in character, become a part of a story, and yet still button an emotional moment. But this was a great excuse to listen to some of my favorite singers push the boundaries of their comfort zones.
