PLAYLIST FOR “BUCKET LIST BONANZA” 6.22.24

23 Jun

My next-to-last show of the season and it made me think about all the music I haven’t played for my audience this year, which made me think of all the things I haven’t done in my life. (Sadly, that’s how my mind usually works.) So far there’s only one thing on my bucket list: buy a bucket. With the help of an internet list of bucket list suggestions, I gave myself – and my audience – lots of potential and some obvious choices for things to do before kicking the bucket (which I haven’t bought yet.)

PLAYLIST FOR “AN EVENING WITH FRANK” (AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST) (10.8.22)

9 Oct

Couldn’t do a live show this week, so I led my audience on a trip down memory lane…which, admittedly, is becoming a shorter and shorter trip for me. Here’s what I wrote when the show was first broadcast.

He gave us so much wonderful, unforgettable music. Wait, you’re thinking of that Frank? I was thinking of Frank Loesser and I tried to squeeze as many gems in his voluminous songbook from movies, Broadway, and popular song into a couple hours as I could. But before the Evening With Frank began, I opened the show again with another song from a young Ukrainian jazz singer who remains (as of this posting) safe and even hopeful in Kyiv.

  • TAKE LOVE EASY  /  Alina Zalozna Quartet
  • GUYS AND DOLLS  /  Sammy Davis Jr.  /   “If I Ruled The World”
  • LUCK BE A LADY  /  Frank Sinatra  /   “Best Of Vegas”

  • MORE I CANNOT WISH YOU  /  Johnny Hartman  /   “This One’s For Tedi”
  • TWO SLEEPY PEOPLE  /  (Mystery Vocalists)  /   Carly Simon & John Travolta  /   “Film Noir”
  • NEVER WILL I MARRY  Kelly Green  /   “Life Rearranged”
  • I’VE NEVER BEEN IJN LOVE BEFORE  /  Oscar Peterson Trio  /   “The Trio Live From Chicago”
  • HAMLET  /  Karen Oberlin  /   Karen Oberlin Live At The Algonquin”
  • THE LADY’S IN LOVE WITH YOU  /  Steven Pasquale  /   “Somethin’ Like Love”

PLAYLIST FOR “DISINFORMATION WEEK” (3.5.22)

6 Mar

Disinformation. It’s a word we’re hearing frequently these days. Some people call Disinformation propaganda; some people with a straight face call it alternative facts. I call it pernicious lies. So I spent two hours defining and explicating Disinformation; and, most importantly, telling people how to protect themselves from it. JUST KIDDING! You know me. Instead, I spent the two hours exploiting this sensitive issue and squeezing every last drop of irony and rueful laughter from it. But before things got too silly, I started the show with a much-too appropriately titled Ukrainian folk song, recognizing the only thing breaking apart faster than my heart is the world

PLAYLIST FOR “LAUGHING AT LIFE”-AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (2.5.22)

6 Feb

A show from the archives, this time from back in 2017, which explains why you can hear the last vestiges of hope in my voice. Here’s how I introduced the show back then…

It’s true that smiling requires more muscles than frowning, which must be why smiling always tires me so quickly. Still, considering all that we know and fear about the world today, I thought it was worth spending a couple hours focusing on laughing and smiling. PLAYLIST FOR “MEMORY PROBLEMS” (9.29.20)

27 Sep

In the past I’ve done shows on “whistling” and “dancing.” Why did I choose those themes? Because those are two things I’ve never been able to do. In my life! I also can’t roll my tongue but, come on – if you can get two hours of songs out of that theme, you should be doing my show. In picking themes, I gotta go with what I know. So Memory Problems, songs about remembering and forgetting, was an obvious choice. I finished the show with a poem/prayer sung in Hebrew by Sophie Milman. I couldn’t let RBG’s passing go without some kind of celebration.

PLAYLIST FOR “LAUGHTER & TEARS” (12.7.19)

9 Dec

I’m sure I’ve mentioned a few dozen times that I’m a “glass half-empty” kind of guy. Not only do I think the glass is half-empty, I worry about who’s been drinking from my glass. I can find something sad about an IRS refund. And don’t get me started about “brown paper packages tied up with strings.” Don’t you think that’s setting the bar for happiness a little low? So, of course,  when I do a show about Laughter, I’m also going to do a show about Tears. It makes perfect sense to me – and, after all, it’s my show.

SONG TITLE  /  Artist  /  CD Or Album Title

PLAYLIST FOR “UNCIVIL DISCOURSE” (5.19.19)

19 May

Angry. Bitter. Vindictive. Sarcastic. Belittling. Bullying – no I’m not trying to come up with my professional wrestler name. Haven’t you noticed? That’s how people talk to each other these days. Whatever happened to listening? Whatever happened to “if you don’t have anything nice to say…” I mean, whatever happened to civil discourse? I know, that’s so old world. Okay, I’ll join the new world – if only for two hours.
