PLAYLIST FOR “DESERT ISLAND GAME-2015” (3.7.15)

7 Mar

We’ve played The Desert Island game before when I’ve asked listeners to choose songs or singers to take with them to a desert island. Of course I laughed at their pain and deliberations and difficulty in choosing to take one thing and leave behind another equally good choice — but not this week because it was my turn to play the game. Suddenly the Sondheim lyrics, “the choice may have been mistaken, but choosing was not” didn’t sound as easy or certain.

Because I was the absolute only one at this Office Christmas Party, there was no sucking up to the boss, no meaningless chit-chat with people you wouldn’t save if they were drowning, and yet, unexplainably, a fight still broke out.

PLAYLIST FOR “INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY” (4.26.14)

26 Apr

International Jazz Day is April 30th, but I couldn’t wait. Here’s a sampling of some wonderful jazz singers from around the world. Check out Jazz Day events at Jazzday.com. There must be something going on near you, so be sure to support this music we love.

It’s also almost Toots Thielemans’ 92nd birthday. He decided recently to retire, so I especially wanted to celebrate his birthday, his long career, and his music which always came straight from his heart into his harmonica. Thanks, Toots!

This week, as another in a series of uncalled for public services, I tried to warn you about a musical danger which is as rampant as it is clever – Anthropomorphism in the Great American Songbook. Don’t try to thank me — just doing my job. Okay, I changed my mind. Go ahead, try to thank me.

PLAYLIST FOR “THE DESERT ISLAND GAME” (2.22.14)

22 Feb

Which swimsuits to take to a desert island, which books, which movies, which antiseptics — all that’s easy. But which music? Tonight was another attempt at my coming to grips with the question that tantalizes and tortures people, usually when they’ve run out of important things to think about. Some of this music I can’t do without, and some it…well, choosing is just too hard. Don’t forget: You can play this game at home, but knowing you, you’ll somehow turn it into another drinking game. I’m so proud.

PLAYLIST FOR “LOVE AND MARRIAGE…AND MUSIC” (2.1.14)

1 Feb

Every week I try to play some of the best marriages of words and music, singer and arranger, what’s written on the sheet music and what’s created in a singer’s mind. This week I also focussed on singers and musicians who are married in a more literal way. Whether they sing together, sing and play, sing and arrange, just about everyone I played is also husband and wife. And by including Mickey Rooney and his 8th wife, I was also able to reinforce the precept that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it
