PLAYLIST FOR “THE TURNTABLE FOR ONE YEAR IN REVIEW – 2020” (1.2.21)

3 Jan

Looking back at the god-awful events of 2020 was entirely too upsetting, although looking back at how I reacted to those events with my musical themes may be almost as upsetting. I think we can do better in 2021. We have to.

(BTW: I played the Michel Legrand as an anniversary shout-out to my wife. That cut was her processional at our wedding 51 years ago.)

It was that time again, time to ask people to put their money where my mouth is. Otherwise known as Fall Pledge Week. Remembering that you catch more flies with honey, I knew immediately the last thing I wanted to do was attract flies. So instead, I tried songs of full-throated, unfettered flattery to encourage people to go to wmnr.org and click on the trusty “Donate Now” button and support Turntable For One

PLAYLIST FOR “SOCIAL DISTANCING” (3.21.20)

22 Mar

At times like these – perilous times, uncertain times – people turn to Turntable For One for information and advice. Clearly these are people who’ve never listened to the show before. But, okay, I can totally pretend to abandon my usual format and inveterate cynicism to talk about something serious. Social Distancing. What is it? How do I do it? And what can I do while I’m doing it? I think these songs demonstrate some of the actions and attitudes people should adopt to fill the long months ahead. I also threw in Stacey Kent and Rachael & Vilray to remind people of what we won’t be able to do, perhaps for a long, long time. A little salt never really hurts a wound, does it?

PLAYLIST FOR “I GOT TWO WORDS FOR YOU” (9.7.19)

9 Sep

You know what drives me crazy? People who over-use already tired rhetorical cliches, such as “With all due respect” – which is always a lie. My least favorite: “I got two words for you…” I thought (hoped) if I used that phrase over and over and over for two hours and if every song I played had a two-word title, maybe – just maybe – people would think twice (or maybe even once) and not use that annoying expression. Did it work? I got three words for myself: “In your dreams.”

PLAYLIST FOR “PREVIEW OF COMING ATTRACTIONS FOR 2019” (1.5.19)

6 Jan

The year in music didn’t start on a happy note. Kellye Gray, a unique and passionate singer died suddenly. Still, with all of these interesting new singers and all of the music being released we’ve never heard before from singers and musicians we know and love, I tried to tell my audience 2019 was going to be a good year for Turntable For One.
