I didn’t record a new show (from home) this week. Instead I went wandering through the Turntable For One archives looking for my lost youth and innocence. No luck there, but I did find this program from June a couple of years ago, which seems now like a far distant world ago. Funny how my old themes seem less ironic and more poignant these upside-down days… This is what I said two years ago:

Anybody else having bad dreams these nights? So, I’ve not been getting much sleep, but I did get a theme for this week’s show – songs about dreams and a few songs about things to dream about. Also I gave a special shout-out to Georgia for opening up its beauty salons, bowling alleys, restaurants, and tattoo parlors. Lots of good cheer, great holiday music by favorites young and old, some talk about chopping down a Christmas tree and how the dreidel was an item of torture in my youth, plus chestnuts roasting on an open fire – until I remembered the radio station doesn’t have a fireplace. Merry Christmas to all; and a very happy new year. God knows we could use both.

PLAYLIST FOR “VIOLENCE WEEK” (11.9.19)

If you ask me – and I’m going to pretend that you have – nothing stirs the heart and lifts our spirits like the men and women who, through practice and persistence, have mastered the art of violence — hey, wait a minute. That’s not what I’m typing! How do I turn off auto-fill? I mean VIOLINS! All of the music this week features a violin or a string section, or a jazz or classical violinist, plus a couple singers who also play violin. All in all, it was a very satisfying auditory discussion of string theory.

PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO CLIMATE CHANGE” (10.19.19)

The earth is heating up, ice caps and glaciers are melting, the seas are rising, and many species, including our own, are threatened with extinction. What are we going to do? Well, I did what I always do: I exploited these serious problems, trivializing them with two hours of catchy, swinging, and often ironic songs. Some of them were comments on current conditions; others were things we need to curtail to save the planet. The first song was an answer to “What’s going to be the new capital city of the East Coast?” The second song was written in 1921 but casts an eerie darkness to what’s going on today. Just to be a pro-active citizen, I recycled and re-used a previous mystery vocalist. And as for the last two songs: which one will future generations be singing? That’s up to us now.
