PLAYLIST FOR “I SEE YOU; I HEAR YOU” (6.6.20)

7 Jun

I think one of the responsibilities of having a microphone every week is knowing when to shut up. I did that (for the most part) this week and let singers and songwriters who for so many years have seen and heard with perception and then written with eloquent honesty about this painful struggle playing out once again across America.

PLAYLIST FOR “GRADUATION DAY 2018” – AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST (5.23.20)

24 May

I didn’t record a new show (from home) this week. Instead I went wandering through the Turntable For One archives looking for my lost youth and innocence. No luck there, but I did find this program from June a couple of years ago, which seems now like a far distant world ago. Funny how my old themes seem less ironic and more poignant these upside-down days… This is what I said two years ago:

How about 2 hours of intelligent and coherent and compact commencement speeches and graduation messages without having to sit in the sun and wait two hour to see your kid walk across the stage and graduate in 15 seconds? Don’t try to thank me. Just doing my job.

PLAYLIST FOR “IN YOUR DREAMS” (4.25.20)

26 Apr

Anybody else having bad dreams these nights? So, I’ve not been getting much sleep, but I did get a theme for this week’s show – songs about dreams and a few songs about things to dream about. Also I gave a special shout-out to Georgia for opening up its beauty salons, bowling alleys, restaurants, and tattoo parlors. I celebrated the occasion with a special Turntable For One contest: What should the tattoo say on the first person to get a new tattoo in GA. My suggestion? Do Not Resuscitate.

PLAYLIST FOR “LET’S GO CLUBBING” (4.11.20)

12 Apr

While everyone’s sheltering in place or self-quarantining, there are two ways to look at this week’s show featuring all live performances from jazz clubs and venues around the world: either I’m trying to make people feel bad because of all the night life we’re missing OR I’m trying to give people hope for what’s to come after this damned pandemic has run at least its first course. Which is it? You be the judge. I just had fun playing some of my favorite singers in front of a band, behind a microphone, in front of an audience.

23 Feb

I thought when you experience a Teachable Moment, you’re supposed to reflect and even have a change of heart. The only reflection I’m seeing these days is in my mirror – and I’m not too happy with those results either. PLAYLIST FOR “VIOLENCE WEEK” (11.9.19)

11 Nov

If you ask me – and I’m going to pretend that you have – nothing stirs the heart and lifts our spirits like the men and women who, through practice and persistence, have mastered the art of violence — hey, wait a minute. That’s not what I’m typing! How do I turn off auto-fill? I mean VIOLINS! All of the music this week features a violin or a string section, or a jazz or classical violinist, plus a couple singers who also play violin. PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO CLIMATE CHANGE” (10.19.19)

20 Oct

The earth is heating up, ice caps and glaciers are melting, the seas are rising, and many species, including our own, are threatened with extinction. What are we going to do? Well, I did what I always do: I exploited these serious problems, trivializing them with two hours of catchy, swinging, and often ironic songs. Some of them were comments on current conditions; others were things we need to curtail to save the planet. The first song was an answer to “What’s going to be the new capital city of the East Coast?” The second song was written in 1921 but casts an eerie darkness to what’s going on today. Just to be a pro-active citizen, I recycled and re-used a previous mystery vocalist. And as for the last two songs: which one will future generations be singing? That’s up to us now.
