HINT FOR THIS SATURDAY NIGHT’S MUSICAL THEME (10.29.16)

28 Oct

HINT:

It’s almost here. The day some have been eagerly awaiting while others have been abjectly fearing. It’s going to make some people very happy; they’re going to go crazy. Others, not so much. Wait – you know I’m talking about Halloween, not election day, right?

I started the show with an hour of songs about debates, candidates, and politics. What was I thinking? So half-way through, realizing people want to get away from the cacophony and chaos, I played an hour of music to steer attention away and calm the soul from all the madness.

PLAYLIST FOR “ELLA FITZGERALD CHALLENGES THE WORLD!” (9.24.16)

26 Sep

This week Ella Fitzgerald took on all comers in a head-to-head, well, really a voice-to-voice competition. She sang standards and some surprising duets; she even challenged Sarah Vaughan in a “forgetting the lyrics” competition (Sarah won) and challenged Shirley Horn to a “slow singing” competition (Shirley won). But it was impossible to listen to this show without marveling at Ella’s musicality and her warmth and without feeling fortunate that we had her for so long.
