PLAYLIST FOR “RIGHT TRACK OR WRONG TRACK” 2.1.25

1 Feb

Are we on the right track or the wrong track? It’s a question and a concern for many many people these days. Did I have the answers? Did I offer words of wisdom to smooth and soothe the anxiety surrounding us? Of course not! Instead I did what I always do. I exploited that anxiety to fill two hours with music. But you gotta admit: it was some damned good music.

PLAYLIST FOR “OSCAR NIGHT 2024!” 3.9.24

11 Mar

My traditional Pre-Academy Awards show when I play Oscar winner and losers. This year I wanted to do something different…maybe feature the music of Oscar Hammerstein, or Oscar Peterson or Oscar Levant…or list 101 things you can do with an Oscar Myer wiener. (The WMNR legal team gave that a “thumbs down” in a nano-second.) Then I thought, what about songs that didn’t get nominated? Don’t they need some love? So this year I featured Winners (W), and Losers (L), plus great songs that got Snubbed (S)!

PLAYLIST FOR “DOUBLE THREATS, TRIPLE THREATS, & MORE” (2.26.22)

27 Feb

Double threats. Maybe even triple threats. And no, I’m not talking about my fan mail. I’m talking about people – well, take Hugh Jackman, for example. He acts, he also sings, he can dance, and he can tear your throat out with his Wolverine claws. This week was dedicated to those people blessed with more than one enviable talent. Some of the singers this week write songs or came from other professions. Plus some of the songs come from unexpected sources – Dorothy Parker, Kazuo Ishiguro, even Fred Astaire. Gotta say I am in awe of these multi-talented people, especially since I had to give up chewing gum a few years back.

PLAYLIST FOR “WINNING SINGERS-LOSING SONGS” (4.24.21)

25 Apr

It’s time for the Oscars again. And, yes, you can fault the Oscars for being over-the-top – over the top egos, over the top vanity, over the top self-adulation. On the other hand, what do people who don’t win usually say? “It’s an honor just to be nominated.” And I can’t remember anyone at the Oscars insisting the voting was rigged or asking for a recount. I’m just saying… So in honor of the Academy Awards, I brought back a longtime Turntable for One tradition, listening to some wonderful Oscar nominated songs. Not the winners! Instead I presented a couple of hours of winning singers singing Oscar losing songs.

PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO THE ADVERB” (4.10.21)

11 Apr

Intelligently, flawlessly, compassionately, thrillingly, unbelievably – these are just a few of the words no one has ever used in describing how I put this show together. Why? Well, I’m going to tell myself that it’s because people just don’t know how to use adverbs. So clearly it’s time for another lesson in Making Grammar Great Again. That’s why I presented proudly, defiantly, fearlessly, and oh so timely, a musical tribute to Adverbs this week.

PLAYLIST FOR “THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS” (2.1.20)

3 Feb

I’ve tried for months to do this theme, but something horrible would happen – in a mall, or a night club, or, dear God, another school. So, of course, out of decency I deferred. Besides, after a tragedy, that time is always reserved for politicians to offer their “thoughts and prayers” in lieu of doing anything. I thought I was safe this week, maybe because it was the night before the Super Bowl, or the night before Groundhog Day, or maybe because America really needs a hug this week, I offered some songs about thoughts and prayers.

PLAYLIST FOR “SONGS ABOUT SONGS” – A SHOW FROM THE ARCHIVES – (1.18.20)

20 Jan

MIA again last Saturday and pulled another show from the archive, a show from 2016. I’ll be back live this Saturday. Keep watching this space: Details to follow…

Over the last 7 years, I’ve thought of musical themes of songs for about nearly everything you can think of. Hope you caught my shows with songs about Boy Meets Tinder, Practical First Aid, and The Only Thing The NSA Isn’t Watching Is Paint Drying.
